“Comfortable Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2008

Our stay at the Peninsula was very enjoyable, and this was helped by the very attentive staff who were well trained and keen to help in making our stay so pleasant. Sheryn Blundstone the Manager, was always leading from the front smiling ,whether it was 8am or 8pm.
The location of the hotel was excellent so close to shops, restaurants, bars and the marina and coupled to the facilities of the hotel this was the location of our trip.

My husband and I have just spent 6 days at this hotel.
We found the hotel to be a long way below what we expected. The rooms were just about average - thats all can be said about them. Not up to standard for an hotel with this ones rating
The service was dreadful. We arrived late in the evening after flying in from Sydney and were looking forward to a nice dinner and drinks. We were amazed and disappointed to find that the reception, bar and restaurant had closed at 9.00pm. No room service or mini bar in the room either. The whole place was locked up and our room key was left in an envelope at the front door!!! We had to follow the instructions to gain entry, navigate round the pool area and find our room. No one to help with luggage which had to be hauled up stairs by ourselves. Not the most encouraging welcome or should I say lack of welcome.
Breakfast was another daunting experience. The place was such a shambles it made Fawlty Towers look good. The area where food was served was too small and finding a seat was a problem. The cooked food was hit and miss - usually miss. Most mornings the serving dishes were empty and when bacon eventually arrived the eggs did not and vice versa. The service staff eventually responded to requests but we found their attitude surly and unhelpful.
Overall this hotel was poor and our only negative experience of what has otherwise been excellent Australian hospitality and service quality.

  • Liked — The bus ride back to the airport
  • Disliked — Attitude of management and staff and everything closed up by 9.00pm WHY???

We stayed at the Peninsula for 5 nights over christmas, this was our first time away for christmas and first time in Oz and we were made to feel truly welcome. We had a second floor pool view room which was the size of a flat in the UK. it was so spacious and clean. We had not booked any trips before we arrived and Sheren the Owner noted down what we wanted to do and booked the lot for us taking in tides, weather etc. We ended up, diving christmas day, it was amazing! We had a great stay and the staff couldn't do enough and would recommend to anyone.

We stayed in the Peninsular for 5 nights over christmas in a ground floor seaview suite. The hotel management and staff all went out of their way to be friendly and helpful and the service, cleanliness and standard of accomodation were all excellent. The location is perfect, opposite the beach and the netted swimming area and at the end of Maccrosan street which is the main street with all the bars and restaurants. The beach is lovely and there are gas barbecues provided to use free of charge, and one is situated right opposite the hotel

The suite was in very good condition, with a nice lounge area, a large comfortable bed, and enormous bathroom and a well equipped kitchenette with a large fridge and dishwasher, and detergent, washing up liquid etc all provided. There was also a very impressive selection of different types of teabags, fresh coffee and fresh milk supplied. It was very hot and humid, and the air conditioning was very effective and kept the room cool and comfortable. There was also a guest laundry with detergent all provided free of charge. They seemed to think of everything!

The breakfast buffet is excellent with a good selection of cereals, fresh fruit, pastries and a different selection of hot food each day. The managers were a charming couple and they went out of there way to make Christmas day special and laid on a special breakfast Christmas morning with smoked salmon, champagne etc.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would stay there again.

One strange thing that happened on the last day was the appearance of a family with 3 young children staying in the hotel, because it is supposed to be for adults only and this was the main reason that we booked it!

We stayed in the Peninsula as part of our honeymoon in August 07. The location as mentioned by others is excellent. The rooms are very nice with especially nice bathrooms. The kitchen facilities mean that the rooms are more like apartments than hotel rooms. We were provided with a complimentary bottle of champage due to being on honeymoon which was not the case everywhere we stayed. I enjoyed the relaxed nature of breakfast by thet pool each morning.

There are posher hotels in Port Douglas but in order to stay in them you sacrifice location. In my opinion the Penisula provides the best option in Port Douglas.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2007

My wife and I stayed at the Peninsula Hotel for 7 nights, from 27th. July 2007. It occupies the best position in Port Douglas, on the corner of Macrossan Street (the main shopping and restaurant street) and The Esplanade (the short street that runs parallel with Four Mile Beach). The hotel is therefore only a 5-10 minute walk to most places in town, and only 50 metres from the beach. Our room was partitioned into four areas: bathroom, bedroom, kitchen/lounge and patio. The room was on the small side, but well appointed. It was serviced daily. In keeping with most buildings in the town, the hotel is only two storeys high. Our room was on the second storey, and there was a limited beach view from the patio. The hotel has its own private parking for guests. Breakfasts around the pool or overlooking the beach were of buffet style, and very pleasant. The pool is small but elegant, and very well maintained. There is a tiny bar, and small lounge. Other than at breakfasts, guests tend to keep to themselves. So the hotel is very quiet, and we had no noise at night, either from within the hotel or outside on the street. The hotel has its own restaurant. This is a serious mistake, as its limited menu and poor food do not rate well against the many fine restaurants in the town. We ate dinner at the hotel's restaurant on only one night (a Monday). We were the only diners and the food was pedestrian. The restaurant should be closed, and its area converted into a larger lounge. And can I suggest that the word "Boutique" be removed from the hotel's title. This is a pretentious and exaggerated description of a hotel that is well positioned and pleasant, but is no more than good, and certainly not great.

  • Liked — Prime Port Douglas location
  • Disliked — The hotel's restaurant is very poor
