we stayed at the Archipelago during the Easter break holiday.

Pros: Great location. About 100m from the 4 mile beach and a short stroll to the shops and restaurants.

Cons: Tiny tiny TV (try 15 inches). We wanted to use the in room phone but couldnt get an outside line after dialling 0. The lighting in our room is only average. The ceiling fan in our room makes a clicking noise when switched on.

I agree w/one of the previous ratings written.

My wife and I stayed all of one night before we left. We also booked an ocean view and saw a whole bunch of trees instead and found it very misleading as well when we booked. The rooms look more like you are visiting someones home then a professional establishment. Our room smelled like mildew maybe due to the fact that they had a carpet throughout the whole apartment. Not sure why you would have a carpet in a tropical climate but you could tell that the carpet had been there awhile with visible stains. We also killed a few roaches and other bugs. We went during the wet season so we understood if there were a few ants or so, but not roaches.

We left and ended up paying less at the Martinique on Macrossan. It is two apartment buildings away and is very nice, newer facilities (or it looked that way), clean and affordable. Check it out.

Other reviewers gripe about ants, the lack of a promised sea view, and the 'basic' rooms. The ants are miniscule and in any case people, this is the tropics! The lack of a sea view is easily balanced by the fact that unlike much other accommodation in town, the Archipelago is only 10 metres from the beach. Sure the rooms are 'basic', but people who choose apartments like this do so to save money so they can spend time OUTSIDE the apartment. You get fresh towels every day and the kitchen equipment was completely adequate for the cooking I did. Owners Chris and Wolfgang are happy to supply extra equipment if needed.
Here's why I would stay there again. The location is perfect - right next to beautiful Four Mile Beach and away from the main strip, which can get noisy and tawdry. The rainforest around the Archipelago is teeming with rainbow lorikeets, pretty lizards and frogs.
The owners are very flexible about pricing depending on the length of stay. They were kind enough to offer to upgrade my room after a testing night next door to some drunken teenagers on NY's Eve.
The pool is small and mainly in the shade. But the beach is so near, this isn't an issue.
Chris and Wolfgang are extremely helpful without being intrusive. They offer the same services as regards helping guests with tours as more expensive places.
It looks a bit tatty and dated compared to a lot of other apartments on the strip, but don't judge books by their covers. This is a great and reasonable base for people who want to get out and see Australia and its marvellous flora and fauna.
One thing - perhaps they should take away the 'fabulous' from 'Fabulous Sea Views' on their sign, so as not to misleed people who are looking for that sort of thing, and then write negative reviews when they don't get it.

I read the previous comments and had some hesitation before booking a weekend.

Yes, there were ants, but no big deal for us, we can expect that in the wet tropics.
We had a garden view unit, yes not actually a rose garden but a garden of tropical growth. The room was clean and comfortable.

We decided that all we wanted was a place to sleep and that we would spend the money we saved on the more expensive accomodation on restaurants and / or reef trip. We spent our days on a reef trip and exploring the local areas.

The pool was great to for a dip and cool off after a long hot day.

The host was very friendly and seemed to be well organised.

The location was superb, we could amble up to breakfast or dinner, to the beach , markets or wharf.
Even though we had a rental car, we wanted to relax and wander around PortD.

How could we be disappointed after paying $75 per night through wotif? This must be the cheapest accom around and in the main street.

This is a three star property, do not expect the Hilton. If your needs are for a longer stay, then this may not be for you. Do your research before booking this location.

Regards
Jeff

The town of Port Douglas is great. The archipelago misleads you into thinking you have an ocean view. Bring your binnoculars. Our kitchen was infested with ants. The linens looked as if they had not been changed from the previous guests. The room was large, but very dated. We wished we had done a little more research, because Port Douglas offers better accomadations for the same price we paid.
