“Not modern, but beautiful anyway - bring lots of $$$ though”

Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Hotel

We just spend three nights at the Sheraton as part of an 8 night stay in Port Douglas. We loved our stay there. We agree that it could use an update, but it's not run down, it's just not funky and modern. Probably our biggest complaint was how ridiculously expensive EVERYTHING was at the hotel. Examples: $8 delivery charge for any room service order, a coke by the pool is $4.50, dinner buffet was $68/person and breakfast was $35/person. If you don't have a car get ready for a 30 minute walk to town, or a bus ride (you can get three day passes for $18 each I think which is pretty good).

All that aside, the pools are beautiful (they have 5 acres of pools!) and there are so many that it's easy to feel like it's your own private oasis. The suite had a lovely pool view and I think many of them do. The beds were comfy and we never heard anything outside of our room which meant we had wonderful sleeps.

The service at the front is exceptional. The bell staff at this hotel are top notch. They jump up to open doors for you, to drive you anywhere on the enormous grounds (I can't remember exactly but there were hundreads of acres of land for this resort, which has a golf and country club), and to help you book taxis or anything else you need. We did indulge on the seafood buffet one night and it was worth every penny. We couldn't have asked for anything to be more fresh or more tasty. It was exceptional.

Onsite there is even an artist working away during the day. His art is very interesting and it was fascinating to walk by and see what he was working on and how it was progressing. Other amenities include a coffee shop and bakery, a spa, a skin clinic, an opal store, a travel center and more I can't remember. The spa is nothing fancy, but the service was good and the quality of the pedicure I had was very good.

If you are used to the modern "W" hotels or even the Westin brands then you might not be too happy with the Sheraton, but if you want good quality in a beautiful setting and don't mind paying a premium for the extras then this is a very nice choice.

“In Desperate Need of Refurbishment, Great Location, How Sad.....”

The hotel location is amazing and a great starting point for excursions to the Great Barrier Reef but the hotel itself hasn't been refurbished in what seems like decades. Very tired decor in every room, even a digital light control space age like command center between the two beds (controls all the lights on and off in the room, and very 1970's modern...at that time I suppose). Floral bedspreads that are very dated, it just needs many millions of dollars dumped into it to survive. There were also a ton of ants crawling on the bathroom counter, no matter what you did to wipe them away, they just kept coming back. Bugs everywhere. Yes I know this is the tropics but cmon, a little bug spray goes a long way.

If someone like Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton or Shangri La would rip the place down and start from scratch, they'd have a diamond on their hands.

As it stands now, it's just a has been and not at all worth the money they are asking.

We stayed at the resort for a week in July. Check in was fine. We were in and out in 10 minutes. We paid $225 a night USD. We checked our car with the valet for the first night and used self park for the rest of the week. With 2 young kids and always coming and going this saved us about $100 in tips. The rooms were clean but dated. I felt like a pimp from the 70's while laying in the beds. If you travel with kids they will love all of the room light controls on the console between the beds. By the middle of our stay I was getting pretty tired of them playing with the damn buttons. Bathroom was nice but also dated. Could of used a shower curtain or stained glass for a little privacy. High speed internet access is available for $25 AUD a day or $100 AUD for the week. This is the same rate I paid in Sydney and Gold Coast. The salt water lagoons were awesome. My wife and I spent hours swimming with the kids. We could walk out of our room and hop in a shallow lagoon and make our way to the main lagoon where the they have a small sand beach and lounge chairs set up. Waiter service was available but we had a small cooler with juice boxes and snacks for the kids. It ran about $50 AUD for 2 kids meals, a cranberry juice and a rum and coke. You can walk down a few steps behind the salt water lagoon and you are right on the beach. We only ate at the resort once. It was the breakfast buffet and it was average. We had no problems with the staff and they were all helpful. From the kid who went and grabbed us some towels so we could swim 15 minutes before the pool closed to the cleaning lady who brought us a power converter for the laptop within 10 minutes of calling for one. For cheap eats stop by Village Kabob on Grant Street. You can eat like a king for $9 AUD. One kabob could feed myself and my two kids. Hogs Breath Cafe, Pizza Express and Han Court are also good options. We had a great time in Port Douglas and when we return we will stay at the Sheraton Mirage.

“Sad and tired Sheraton”

Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Hotel

My partner and I have just returned from PD. We stayed at the Mirage only 2 days after booking 4. We found it unfriendly, in terrible need of urgent refurbishment, and a very sad tired place indeed. I feel sad that many international travellers might think this is the best Australia can do! Come on Sheraton, fix it up. It used to be great.

I stayed here 2 nights with family.

Room was I would say OK but the bathroom definately was in need of a refit and quite dull.

We loved the lagoon pools and spent a lot of our 2 days just chilling at the pool. Good bar/food service around the pool.

Restaurants very pricey. Better to go into Port Douglas but it is too far to walk. You will need to get a taxi there or use the complimantary bus although it stops very early.

We found it fine for a few days to chill but no more if you want the town close by. We moved in the centre of Port Douglas after that.
