“Terrible Place to stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW via mobile

We stayed here on our honeymoon. We were told 5 star resort, that was quickly down to a 2. We were very disappointed. The rooms are terrible, outdated, 80's style. Not that clean. We were so disappointed we requested to change to another room. Even that room was poor. The wait staff outside hardly no English, poor. The music pool side is repetitive & annoyed me.
The only good thing is the good & cocktails..
Don't stay here if are honeymooners, you won't have a good time.

The positives: great location, wonderful amenities - including the swimming pools, comfortable rooms - although a little tired, excellent restaurants - especially the high quality breakfast buffet, and all with pleasant, professional service.

The negatives - reception asserting, at the time of payment, that it can't separate hotel costs from Accor discounted food costs, i.e. no discount (you assume that when they tell you that your SPG number is recorded, that the hotel is clear on this point), a certain tiredness in various parts of the property, a lack of service around the pool - well, a man could die of thirst, (and even of hunger were it not for the great breakfast).

Like its little brother on the Gold Coast, I understand that the whole place is about to undergo a huge refurbishment, which, especially given the outdated, albeit functional, bathrooms, is about time - well, it is almost 30 years old. Notwithstanding, a stay at this hotel is well worth it, and will only improve post-reno, and, despite some inconveniences, it remains a unique experience in a very unique and beautiful part of the world.

We were a bit wary having read some of the negative reviews on trip advisor but all in all it is a great place to base yourself. Yes some of the hotel rooms are a bit dated but they are large, very clean and comfortable. The pools are absolutely great and the ocean is within yards. The walk along the beach 1.5km to Port Douglas (which is a pleasant, if a bit dull, town) is well worth it. The hotel food is good and not particularly pricey relative to the places in town. I would recommend hiring a car as it just saves a lot of hassle and the niggle of having to pay for all the little trips into town or to the harbour for trips to the Barrier Reef. Very helpful and friendly staff. The tours (we did Barrier Reef, White Water Rafting and Daintree) are no more expensive than booking direct and you get the benefit of local knowledge in the process. We stayed 5 nights and wish we could have stayed longer

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for one of the apartments spread around the grounds, but we stayed in a Spa...

Hubby took me here for surprise 60th bday this week. Yes, it is tired and décor is dated but we found it to be clean and staff (espec Sharon) very helpful and pools amazing. Buffet breakkie yummy and plentiful. "Peskies" restaurant yummy but a bit expensive but great views. Garden lovely but need new plant out as pot plants were dead/dying. Room large with great view of pool, did not smell and every thing in working order. loved the walk along the beach into town but thought the bus trip into town $18 return pp a rip off. Each wing needs to be painted in a different colour so the elderly or those who get lost after a few glasses of bubbles can lock a visual on their room. More staff on poolbars needed. Yummy pina coladas inside. We had a lovely break even with Cyclone Ita joining my party and there was no loss of power. Praps bc we were confined to barracks so to speak during the storm the dinner and lunch could have been complimentary or at least discounted as there was nowhere else we could eat and with limited staff and no room service it would have been the appropriate gesture. Will return to see refit. Very enjoyable stay and Steve's efforts to keep us informed were appreciated.

Room Tip: lagoon view with balcony, second floor.

Save your money never have I ever stayed somewhere that's disgusting. A referb should be done before anyone can stay there. This place would of been fantastic twenty years ago. But not now. We were greeted with at reception with oh hi. Oops there's something wrong with the room. Wow fantastic service for a "5 star" resort. While the duty manager tended to checking us into another room we lugged our stuff to our new room. There was a surprise a couple had just checked in. We lugged all our bags back up to reception for an apology and two free drink cards. Finally settling into our room we are greeted to a tired depilated spacious room. Buttons don't work. The shutters are broken, light fittings were damaged, air conditioning filter was disgusting. We were on a special for breakfast included. For 220 a night its steep. Yeh the pools are good. But that's it. It has a gym 500 meters across the road that looks abandoned. So a lot of facilities that are claimed aren't really available. The whole complex needs to be rendered. Painted. Only new things in the room are the tv 's and fridge. Everything else is clean but worn out the bath fittings are silver once gold chrome. The food is pub quality at best. Again as other traveller's have suggested head to town save your money. Also get yourself a hire car. The hotel did claim that it had a free shuttle from the airport. Another lie. another word of advice due to cyclone ita we were inquiring what the resort emergency plan was a day before the cyclone was due to hit in the morning after breakfast . The response the managers were in a meeting. We visited the daintree forest and returned at around 5 to the same response. We returned to our room to See a piece of paper that was just a generic printout of the government warning. The only respectful thing they did was refund our money. Safest thing we did was to get out of there. There's only one way in and out. We were going to be stuck and paying for a room with no power food, or air conditioning, lost tickets and a hire car your paying out for due to the lack of secure parking. We even asked what happens in this situation due to the duty of care the hotel is to supply. I am sure you can guess the response. I don't want an apology from Steve the manager trying to save face for this company this is an honest warning from a couple that had there holiday ruined. Avoid avoid avoid or you will be disappointed. There are so many hotels close to town that are easier to find they may not have a big pool but some service and modern ammenties are a lot more important

The pools are huge, warm and great for kids. The room is very outdated and the moldy smell is awful. The service at the pool bar is pretty bad. One man doing waiter service and bar tender makes it difficult to get a drink. It could be spectacular if they would update and up keep it. Everything is very expensive here, even a phone call made collect. There is no kids club even if they have it in the directory. If you want a pool go here. If you want more than that then go somewhere else. Too far from town to walk. Make sure you have a car or you will spend a fortune in shuttle services.

The iconic Sheraton Mirage in Port Douglas was opened in 1988 and while it still has that certain "something" which makes it a beautiful retreat, no-one can deny it's in need of some refurbishment.

The owners are on record as saying "The original design is good, the layout is good, so we don't need to knock it all down. We just want to improve it. We want to keep its style but we need to give it fresh blood that's our thinking."

My understanding is that recently announced refurbishments would first involve about 150 rooms on the northern wing of the property and would take six months. Then that would be repeated on the southern side.

Despite this well recognised need for a facelift the hotel is still a class act, with more space than other comparable 5 star resorts in Australia. That's the most impressive part - the sheer open space. From the foyer to the sprawling multi-level restaurants and bars to the endless lagoon-style pools and lush tropical gardens.

The resort is right in the middle of 4 Mile Beach, however during half the year you can't swim in the ocean because of the marine stingers which are almost invisible and can be fatal. So the copious amount of swimming pools which almost surround the hotel are there to compensate, which actually adds to the elegant atmosphere of the place.

I thoroughly enjoyed my week-long stay and once the refurbishments are completed I have no doubt the Sheraton Mirage will regain it's place as Australia's number one resort. It's still good value though and very stylish.

Room Tip: Half the rooms (inward facing) open onto the lagoon pools and the other half (outward facing) open t...
