My wife and I stayed at the Sheraton Port Douglas for 5 nights from the 20 - 25th October. Although we booked a king size bedroom we were put into a room with 2 double beds. When we called up about this we were told that we were not guaranteed a king size bed. After some pressing, they did move us into a king bedroom however I think this only happened because there was a room available. We found their reasoning a little strange considering we were actually confirmed the king size room which is what we paid for (we didnt just request it). I thought the rooms were of good quality and clean however as many other reviews have stated - the rooms (and resort in general) is very very dated. It felt like going back in time or like we were in the National Lampoons European Vacation movie with Chevy Chase. If you like the 80's then you'll love this place.
We had the room for a special at $241 a night and we also bought into the voucher system of 12 vouchers for $240 which if used properly gives you some cheap meals at restaruants and cheap drinks at the pool bar. I found this system to be quite good and also liked the option of forgoing a room service for $15 credit each day of our stay. We also had 2 for 1 breakfast which is the only reason we had breakfast at the resort. At the normal price of $41 pp its not really worth it. In saying that the breakfast was very good quality. As a coffee lover however, i found it very annoying that i had to pay an extra $4 for a decent coffee with my breakfast, you would think the $41 pp would cover a cuppuchino. The standard coffee tastes terrible, its either instant or perculated coffee that has been left out for way too long.
The food all in all was ok but nothing that special. I think they really need to revamp their menu. One restaurant is called Pescatore which stands for Fisherman. There was only about 2 or 3 fish options which weren't that great. The waiter actually recommended the lamb. Oysters were nothing flash. There are 3 restaurants but they all have the same menu so its kind of like being able to eat the same thing but in different locations.
The room service is very expensive. Its $10 just to get the food to your room and no discounts can be given on room service as opposed to eating in their restaurants.
We had high tea and one of the cakes had a very clear bite mark. The staff were very apologetic, replaced the cakes and offered for food and drink to be complementary however it made it very obvious to us that uneaten cakes were passed on from group to group.
The pools and lagoons were amazing and are definately the highlight of the resort. The swim up bar was very good. We had no problems with any staff and most of them were always happy and cheerful.
I think if you get a good deal and make the most of the voucher system and never order room service, then the location and facilities make it worthwhile to stay here - we definately didn't leave regretting our choice. However, if we paid top dollar for it then we would have been unsatisfied. I would say that there would be a fair bit of improvement to move this resort to that next level, mainly in the decor and menus.
Find a good deal. Probably a waste of money paying for anything more than the normal garden rooms.
