We have just spent 10 great days at Nautilus - and that was despite the weather being cooler and windier than we'd hoped! We stayed with another couple in a 2 bed/ 2 bath (1 an ensuite) apartment on the third (top) floor. It was perfect beach accommodation - nothing flash, but really comfortable and in an excellent location. The apartments are a gentle 10 stroll from the main street of Port Douglas (or there's a local bus), but even better they are only 3 minutes to direct access to the 4 Mile Beach - so it was really easy to go up and back from the beach several times a day - especially when the weather was changeable! If the beach was a bit windy, then the pool at the apartments offered both sun throughout the day and shelter too. You could cook all your meals, but we went out every night - after eating in the main town for several nights, we discovered that the 2 best kept secrets were only 2 minutes walk from the apartments - for great value, really good quality food, head to Port O'Call which is an above average backpackers with open dining for the public. Or for really good seafood, fish and kangaroo, we had 2 fabulous meals at Gone Bananas - it sounds a little mad, but the food was the best we had; great cocktails, desserts and liqueur coffees too. Matt & Ange were great hosts and always happy to answer questions. We took their recommendation for a 1 day deluxe safari to the Daintree & Cape Tribulation & it was fabulous. Ask for an apartment on the upper floor if possible, and facing towards town (they get the most sun), and if you're highly sensitive to noise, then consider asking for an apartment without direct frontage to the road. Enjoy!
