I have beeen to Tamarind twice before and this place never disappoints - yes it is a tad Xee, however in my opinion you pay for what you get!!
I was lucky enough to attend at "Taste Test' for their new menu last night along with the appropriate white wines to match - SENSATIONAL is all I can say AND Nick along with the rest of the team are friendly, courteous & just great people.
Thanks Tamarind for another lovely experience!!

“It's The Country not the City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Out of all the restaurants in Cairns this is the closest you will get to big city fine dinning. While the locals might regard this as an expensive restaurant? Cocktails, entree, mains, desert and nobel one to finish 280.00 for two. Not bad in my opinion but it's the country and the staff have no where to compare them selves too. The service was good if a little bit country. The tasting plate was good but frozen prawns (the scallops were fresh), the steak was cooked as ordered but dry as if it had been left uncovered in the fridge for a while (or someone still doesn't know who to age beef properly). The Martini was shaken way too much and a bit watery. Otherwise the rest of the meal was great.

When the hotel was Sofitel (now Pullman) the attention to detail was a bit better and that is what makes a restaurant of this calibre. The other negative which stunned us a bit is a credit card surcharge even on Visa and Mastercard of 1.5% which in my opinion is sheer greed.

While it my not be the standard you would expect from this calibre of restaurant (compared to the cities) this is Cairns best. You can pay these prices at other establishments in the Cairns area but not this level of quality, but certainly not city standards then again not the city prices either. Dinning in Australia is much dearer than most overseas tourists are used too.
If you are a Buddhist then you have to get used to the fact that your gods image is treated as a decorator object rather than a god they don't mean offence it's just a lack of empathy and education. Have dined with many Asian clients who have asked to leave the restaurant due to the lack of respect shown to the representation of their god throughout FNQ.

“Pure excellence in dining !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Cannot understand the previous reviewer. We are also returning customers, albeit 5 years, and the restaurant is one reason we stayed at the Casino. THe meals were all excellent and well catering for my wifes' gluten free. The staff are well trained and the decor is beautiful with nice music. Only criticism is the price but you get the quality.

“Good, but not quite what it used to be...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

We had visited Tamarind many times over the years and had always had exceptional food and service .. but not quite this time. It had been two years since our last visit and we booked a table of four with great enthusiasm, as a special night out with good friends.

The restaurant had just introduced a new menu, but with still some of the old favorites that have given Tamarind such a reputation for flavour and quality (Asian spiced modern food). It was still good, but on my memory, not as good as the old.

Service was also no where near up to there old standard. While the staff were very friendly, their attention to detail is simply not up to scratch. Glasses were allowed to get empty, we had to ask for water, and empty plates did not get cleared away soon enough - especially for the standard they purport to be or used to be. the restaurant is very expensive by anyone's standard (the meals include no sides that are extra) and whilst we were prepared for that, did not get the service we were used to or deserved.

We would have to be very convinced to go back again as the choices around town are extensive - even for the expected quality.
