“More like a gaol than a hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2011

The one redeeming factor of our room was the magnificent view from the verandah. The room was small sparsely furnished, the bed was too soft, you could hardly move in the bathroom and the tv was the smallest I have ever seen. On entering the hotel there are bare walls and long corridors. We kept waiting for the wardens to appear. There is very little art on the walls, and just miles of halls. Its amazing that we didnt get lost. Will certainly not stay at this hotel again.

probably the best appartments in downtown cairns, right on the water's edge above the marina it's the perfect spot. fully self contained modern kitchen, large living space, lovely bathtub. no other fancy hotel features - it's more a longer stay sort of place where people come for regular stays.

Room Tip: harbour view is a must

The Cairns Luxury Apartments are located in the Harbour Lights Hotel. We stayed here for three nights. There was some confusion for us as to the relationship of the Cairns Luxury Apartments to the Harbour Lights Hotel. When we were booking a room through Kayak, all of the sites went to Harbour Lights Hotel with the exception of Orbitz. which went to Cairns Luxury Apartments. As far as we can figure out, the Cairns Luxury Apartments are room within the Harbour Lights Hotel that are owned by someone else. All of the arrangements are handled at the Travel Information Center (which we did not know) on the corner about 100 meters before you approach the Harbour Lights Hotel and not through theHarbour Lights Hotel. Our cab driver did not know this and we did not see anything on Orbitz about this.
The room was a small studio apartment sufficient for sleeping and light eating. It was very clean and well kept. The rooms are cleaned once every three days. The kitchen had a refrigerator but otherwise supplies and facilities were limited, such as there was no bottle opener or corkscrew. The only thing you can heat is water. The room had a balcony with a great view of the harbour and is within easy walking distance of restaurants and shopping. If you plan to go to the Great Barrier Reef, the room is within a couple of minutes walk to the tour boats.

We stayed in the 3 brm sub penthouse, it was just beautiful, self catering with 180 degree views. The only thing I could fault was the toaster was only one sided - meaning the toast had to be turned after one side had toasted! Quite weird. And the front porch light wasnt working, other than that it was really worthwhile and the pool was lovely too. While there were no staff onsite, this wasnt a problem as the accommodation was managed from the visitors centre.

I dont know where to begin!! My partner and i stayed mid February wanting a nice relaxing weekend away and we got the total opposite. The room was quite nice however the cleaning standards were not great! being from a Hospitality back ground my partner a Housekeeping supervisor and myself front line staff at a 5 star standard in Sydney - Our room was looking straight into the hotel across the road but the was the least of our worries. The service on check in was horrible we were ingnored on checkin for about 5 minits whilst 2 young girls were dealing with one person. We had a guranteed 2pm check in and had to wait till 4pm to access our room. I can understand that this happens but 2 hours without being offered to leave our bags or anything was very poor! when we returned to our room the next day at about 6pm it had not been serviced i then callled reception and all i got was housekeeping must of missed your room today and we are sorry! they did not offer to come up and change out towels so my partner then called back and requested our towels and amenities be replaced then waiting nearly 1 hour for this to be done!! On check out we were charged for parking and did not have a car! The girl was hisitant on taking the charges of! A week after checkout my card had a charge of $1500 when i called to inquire what the charges were they then staed it was a pre authorisation! i find very ridicoulous for that amount of money for a 2 night stay at $200 per night!! I would not reccomend to stay here at all their are so many nicer hotels in the cairns region to stay at where you get good service and and a great room for much cheaper!! And just a heads up if your a smoker do not smoke on the balcony as you will b up for a $250 cleaning fee when normally a balconey would mean you could smoke and if you could not it should state otherwise! Verry disapointed and will never ever return or recommend to anybody!! such a shame as it has so much potential.

Room Tip: Never will return!! very disapointed!

A 1 or 2 bedroom on a high floor is best for a business traveler.
Penthouses are not the expensive,considering
Also brink your own USB modem as the hotels can cost.
Mecca bar downstairs is a good place to meet clients,no meal over 20 bucks.
Pool & spa are cold. Gym is small but might be OK,if not there is a huge one next door at the Shangra La
"Tha fish" is great for sea food and view.
Ask for Kathrine [new baby last month] or Ben

Room Tip: Top floors, penthouse and sub penthouse

Excellent hotel/apartments with excellent friendly staff. I think some reviewers have mistaken this hotel for another one of similar name because none of the criticisms I read were true. Our only problem was that we are very sensitive to humidity and we went during the rainy season. So the a/c equip was not capable of drying the room as we like. Clothes, sheets, papers, were cold and damp nearly the whole stay - except when the weather outside was dry. Otherwise we can HIGHLY recommend the apt during the dry season. Also free internet in the lobby!! Staff were exceedingly nice and friendly and helpful. Maintenance did their best to improve the drying effects of the a/c but unfortunately it was just not possible. So if you're sensitive to humidity I recommend you avoid during the rainy season.
