My wife and I stayed for the first time in Cairns and, first of all was surprised how much fun the city is. There is so much to do and see and the people are very cosmopolitan.
We stayed at the Hotel Cairns because we liked the idea of the free car on offer for guests. We loved the look of the hotel with its colonial appeal and the lions ourtside the front door (stone ones of course). It reminded me of Raffles in Singapore. We had a very enjoyable stay, we stayed in a Tower King Room on the fourth floor, which was very roomy and clean with lovely white-painted lourvre doors that opened onto a very private and big (for Australia) balcony.
The bed was huge and comfortable and the room was tastefully furnished wirth a flat screen TV and DVD player, plus radio. It was always spotless when we returned during the day.
There was a fridge and no mini-bar, but there was the offer of filling it up for my own taste. What a good idea. Tea and coffee making facilities were good, although I would have liked a better quality instant coffee. The bathroom was large - and bathrobes came with it.
My wife and I found the breakfast fantastic and the dinner meals of high qulaity and not expensive. The wine list was extensive too.
The staff in the restaurant were very polite, good natured and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble and it was the same at the front desk.
We also tried the small, but well equipped gym. The pool was pretty, but it was too cool to test the waters.
The internet access was easy to obtain. The position is in the city centre, so there is a bit of traffic noise in the morning, but nothing to dfisturb sleep at night. Besides it was worth that to be so close to the marvellous Esplanade with all the shops and restaurant.
But above all, it was terrific to have the free car to make those trip up to Palm Cove, the Tablelands and Port Douglas.
It is a marvellous idea and I certainly will return to the hotel.
