Owner description: Behind the Botanic Gardens is Mount Whitfield Conservation Park, home to the Red and Blue Arrow Trails. These two linked tracks ascend the slopes of Mount Whitfield. The Red Arrow loop trail (1.5Km return) beginning at Collins Avenue, climbs 100m in elevation through rainforest, Eucalypt forest and grasslands to a lookout above the Cairns International Airport offering views over the city and out to Green Island. A short link trail ascends a further 50 metres to another lookout from where the Blue Arrow loop trail (4.5Km return) commences. The Blue Arrow trail takes you through mainly rainforest to an elevation of 300m. About half way around, a short side track will take you to a lookout on the summit of Mt Lumley Hill where you get views along the coast to the north of Cairns.

“Tough and Tougher”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

I had a bit of a glute injury so this wasnt the best thing to do with all those stairs. But if I was in good health it is a really good track to do. You can walk it, jog it or run it. There is a short version or the longer version once you become more fit. Really the only steep incline in Cairns so its the place to go!

Nice scenery too but bring some mosquito spray because they are everywhere

“Good exercise great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

Part of the botanical gardens, about 1.2km with about 650 steps in total. Good views at the lookout and the more adventurous can do the 2-3hour blue arrow walk

“Great place to exercise & a top view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

Red Arrow is an ideal place for cardio exercise, it has many steps & is a great work out, do it twice if you're fit. Once up the top there's a nice view.

“suitable for everyone”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

A climb of about 250m through the rainforest, but so close to road access. Only moderate fitness level required. Can do it at your own pace. Allow at least an hour to take it in.

“Worth the effort ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

A great walk albeit not really for those after a relaxing stroll! The effort is worth it once you reach the top and admire the views this walk has to offer. It is a great walk and there is so much to see.
