Owner description: Kuranda Scenic Railway is the original scenic rail journey to Kuranda. This spectacular experience travels over bridges and through tunnels hand-made by North Queensland's pioneers over 100 years ago. Traversing the World Heritage listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park, this is one of the world's great railway journeys.

“A great trip - do it one way at least.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

The Kuranda Scenic Railway (KSR) features two trips each way every day between Cairns (City or Freshwater stations) and the mountain town of Kuranda in the nearby highlands. As such, it is just one of the options for visiting Kuranda (others are self-drive, shuttle bus, tour buses and SkyRail) so I will restrict my comments to just the train travel rather than waxing on about attractions at Cairns and Kuranda.
The railway took many years to build in the late 1800s at considerable loss of life and was a remarkable engineering achievement. These days, its main use is historic tourism. The carriages are genuine antique/veteran but the engines are modern. It's a slow trip either way partly because passenger viewing opportunities are maximised but also because of the average 1:50 gradient and the sharp turns.
I'm no railway fan but I found this to be money well spent. The occasional long views are magnificent; the running history commentary is very well done; the surrounding rain forest is very interesting but the overwhelming feature is the realisation that men with just hand tools managed to do so much in such unfriendly terrain. We took the train both ways and it was well worth it.

“Good trip, but pricy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

This is a pretty trip, through rainforest and with views of waterfalls and some great views down through the hills. It has a running commentary at notable points to keep you informed and would be enjoyed by those who like train travel.
Note that there are no refreshments served on board, so eat at the Freshwater café before hand and bring some snacks for this 2 hour train ride. However there are toilets and drinking water on board.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

Fab outing we really enjoyed it, had the best coffee I have had in cairns at the shop next to the post office in kuranda . Got some great indigenious art work from a lady at the end in t he rainforest market and so cheap compared to other artwork ( painted by her newphew ) .train ride home was very interesting and historical . Was not keen to do this day but really enjoyed it.
