This a must do for any visitor to Cairns. We chose to go up in the Kuranda express and return by Skytrain over the rainforest canopy. Both journeys were incredible. From Freshwater station, the gallant little Express chugs its way bravely up the increasingly steep climb, through long hand carved tunnels in solid rock, across the outstanding and astonishing Stoney Creek falls bridge. Enjoying spectacular views of Cairns and the Coral Sea beyond, with Green Island on the horizon, the train continues through Tunnel 15, the longest on the journey, past Robb's Rock, a monument to John Robb who built the railway, until it pauses at Barron Falls. Passengers are encouraged to get off to wonder at the magnificent waterfalls here, powering the hydro-electric station lower down, before finally arriving at Kurunda station and the wonders in the town beyond.
