“Great hostel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012 via mobile

Had a absolutely great time here and the staff was amazing. Very helpful and super nice. Made my iTunes ray and planning my Queensland portion of my Australia trip a breeze. The Aussie BBQ was great! The biggest benefit was probably the biggest negative of hostel and that was location. It was nice and peaceful which made it feel more homely, but also meant a 20 min walk to town. There was a free shuttle to town, but schedule was not always conducive to my needs so I had to walk a fe times. But certainly not a major deal. That said hostel had free wifi, beds were comfy with new pillows. If I was back in area I would definetly stay here!

We stayed here as a family of six, aged 6-75, with a four bed and a double room. Even though the hostel was full and the tiny camping area crowded, we coped with the shared kitchens and bathrooms without much difficulty (though on the BBQ night we had to grab plates and cutlery back from the garden!). Some nights people sitting outside were a bit noisy, but we probably woke them up in the morning too. The kids loved the pool, and that was also the best place for us to sit and read after dark. The shared spaces are packed with brochures so you can plan trips really easily, and Laura at the front desk gave us great advice and booked everything we needed for the whole week in about half an hour. Staying here meant we saved money to enjoy ourselves on the reef, green island, sky train and Daintree. The shuttle into town and back was great and very reliable - if there were too many waiting the driver made extra trips, so we only needed to make the 20 minute walk a few times (more for the walk than out of need). A great week (and NO bugs).

Tropic Days Backpackers is a lovely hostel just ten minutes walk away from the center of Cairns. It is absolutely clean and the staff is very helpful and friendly. There's always a nice atmosphere that encourages socialization. Although it's a cheap hostel, it has all the facilities you need (everybody love free wi-fi...). The location, beeing a little away from the center of town is also very quiet during night. Monday night grill party is a must!

We camped here for three nights (shady, sandy pitches at the end of the garden - we almost got flooded out but can't really blame the hostel for the weather!) and then spent one night in a four-bunk bedroom. Kitchens are spacious and well-equipped - but you are locked out from 9.30pm to 7am if you are camping, which we found a bit odd and inconvenient. There is also only one wc and shower-room accessible to campers when the buildings (two adjacent houses) are secured overnight (same as kitchens, one in each house), which was a problem with the number of campers (six or so tents). Even during the day, there was often a queue for the loo, or one had to dash from one house to the other in the hope that the one wc in the other house was free... There were three picnic tables under cover between the two houses, which were a godsend late evening and early morning, especially given the wet weather. Each house had a living space, which it would have been nice to use, but when we stayed in the room overnight, the sofas were occupied by flooded out campers...

Enough complaining, because, lack of bathrooms and locked out campers aside, the hostel was actually really nice. Pretty gardens, lovely pool (hardly being used for some reason), friendly staff. We took two trips organised through the hostel - one to Kuranda and one to the Reef, both went smoothly and were good value for money. The free shuttle to and from the city centre was good, although we walked it too - it took about 20 minutes. The free wifi was great too, a real bonus. We'd definitely consider staying again if we ever return to Cairns.

We spent several nights here in a Private Double (and one of their tents) in July 2012. The staff members were all very friendly and incredibly helpful with all aspects of our stay. They were able to rearrange our whole itinerary when one of the companies we booked with stopped taking tours. The free shuttle bus to town was incredibly useful, and the free meals at the Woolshed were absolutely delicious. The rooms themselves were basic, but clean. The hostel was also quiet, as everyone abided by the 10pm noise curfew that was in place. It meant that we got a good night's sleep on the night's when we had early pick ups.

I stayed at Tropic Days for 1 night about a month ago and was very impressed. The rooms were clean and my bed was comfortable. The hostel had all of the facilities you would need and the staff were extremely helpful. The hostel also ran a free minibus service to and from the centre of Cairns and there was a bus service that picked me up to go to the airport for only $12. There were nice communal areas especially outside. I wish I'd had a chance to stay longer as Tropic Days seems like a great place to get to know new people.

Spent two nights here with my sister and 14 year old daughter in a triple share room. Arrived at 4am and they told us the code so we could get in. Rooms spotless and very well maintained. There seemed to be someone responsible for cleaning up day and night, so it was always tidy. Great facilities and a lovely feel. Two old houses with fans and wooden floorboards. Several lounge rooms, lots of books, free internet, a pool area and little garden with pool table. I would happily stay here again. Owners and staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble.

Room Tip: If you have heavy bags suggest you request a downstairs room.
