I'm sure the previous reviewer had his reasons for writing what he did, maybe he was in a bad mood after too many beers at the Woolshed or something, but I had a great experience at Jimmy's recently and would definitely reccommend it to anyone wanting to stay in budget waterfront accommodation in Tropical North Queensland.
I found the staff at Jimmy's to be extremely helpful and they seemed to know all their guests by name which added a nice personal touch. I didn't book any tours with them, but I was around when other people did and they seemed to be getting pretty good advice about the right tour for them. They offer heaps of tours including diving, snorkelling, Cape Tribulation, Daintree, car/van rental etc etc etc. All you need!
I was in a 4 share all female dorm which was perfectly adequate (mattresses could be thicker though) and we had our own clean bathroom. It was quite hot, but then it is the tropical north and there is coin operated air conditioning which costs a dollar for about 3 hours. If you wanted to pay a bit more there are also dorms rooms with TV, fridge and kitchennette, although we found that we didn't really need this as there are 2 shared, well equipped kitchens as well (one of these kitchens has a TV too). The hostel provides a free breakfast (ok so it's just toast and jam but better than nothing!) and they also give out vouchers for a free evening meal (when you buy a drink) at Rhinobar which I never actually took advantage of but it sounds better than a poke in the eye with a stick to me!
The hostel has a small swimming pool which again I didn't actually use as the hostel is right across the road from the Lagoon which is an awesome free open air swimming pool on the Esplanade, but having a pool at the hostel is a nice touch anyway.
In terms of location the hostel couldn't be better. Right on the ocean front with the great boardwalk just outside the door, the Night markets a few doors down and just round the corner from all the nightlife including the Woolshed Pub, PJ O'Briens pub, Rhinobar, Gilligans and heaps more. There's a big shopping mall a few blocks away, 2 cinemas nearby and a big Woolworth's supermarket not too far. Excellent.
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay at Jimmy's. I was there for about a week and prior to that had stayed at the cheaper International Hostel a few doors down and hated it. Jimmy's would definitely get my vote especially if you're up for a good time but don't want the headache of staying at some of the bigger party hostels like Gilliagan's.
