Loved the atmosphere at this hostel - the staff are totally fantastic and helpful, and the vibe is very friendly and lovely. Not sure why someone below said it was hard to meet people - I suspect that has a lot more to do with their attitude than with Dreamtime! I found the opposite, this place felt very safe and welcoming. There are movie nights, games nights, bbq nights and wonderful fire-dancing performances on Wed. nights so try to be there for one of those!
However I was a little bit confused about the 90% rating this hostel has. There are many things that could use improvement and setting up high expectations just makes it more likely people will notice/focus on those things that DON'T live up to a 90%. The rooms are very basic with no reading lights for the beds (means people are flinging on the overhead lights at all hours, waking everyone up), no screens on the windows (particularly unsettling as yeah, there are signs about the extreme dangers of mosquito bites all over the hostel), not enough power outlets (but I think you can ask for a power bar at the front desk? maybe?), and no storage space or extra space of any kind, so people's stuff/bags quickly gets spread all over the rooms. There does seem to be a bit of an issue with bugs, which, again, wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that some of them carry tropical diseases in this area. Much of the hostel is technically outdoors (and covered with a big tarp/tent thing), which leaves the hostel very open (obviously) to the damp/rain/bugs/wind/heat and other elements. Plus it seems to give smokers the impression that smoking is acceptable virtually everywhere - encouraged by the numerous ashtrays everywhere. Not to be a Ned Flanders here, but we all know how disgusting and dangerous smoking is by now: a hostel should not be encouraging its patrons to blow their cancerous breath in my face in the common/dining areas. If the common room were a room and not a tented area, it would be illegal and unacceptable.
If you're priority in Cairns is atmosphere and helpful, friendly staff, this is a fantastic place. If your priority is cleanliness and/or amenities, there are much better hostels for this price.

Many thanks for taking the time to provide us some feedback. Our team was glad to hear you found us safe, welcoming with atmosphere and that the staff were fantastic. We really do love living in the tropics because of the outdoors.
As a non smoker myself I couldn't agree more that its not the best habit to get into. The fact is a lot of guests do smoke and we have to accommodate them in our space as well. We have ample signage stating "'No Smoking" is allowed inside the buildings or dinning areas next to the Kitchens. You are right the undercover area in the main courtyard and walkway between two buildings we do allow smoking as it is outside and breezy. We also do have a free dry Storage area for excessive baggage. Every year Cairns City Council reports cases of Dengue fever in the City and we feel obliged to inform and educate people rather than to hide the fact.
