“Not sure how I feel about this place”

Cairns Queenslander

We stayed here not too long ago and I still don't know how I feel about this hotel. We thought we were getting a good value - but it turns out it's a 30 minute walk to almost everything and a $10 taxi ride if you would rather not walk. So, our discount hotel ended up costing us more than a hotel downtown Cairns if you include the taxi fare that we paid.

The rooms need updating. But they were large for a couple, don't know if they would be comfortable for more than 4 people. We didn't use the pool, but looked ok.

Like I said, I am not certain how I feel about this hotel. I wouldn't stay here again b/c of the location, but if it were closer to downtown Cairns, I might consider it a viable option.

I would stay away from this one. We had a 2 bdrm apt and it had one extremely small batroom with a show that could barely fit one midsized person. Very few outlets. The whole place needs to be updated. They only make the beds and leave new towels. They don't do any of the dishes and don't sweep or clean anything. If you are staying more than 2 days could get a bit dirty. It does have a washer and dryer if you can figure out how to use it. And the doors are situated aquardly or slide and make a lot of racket. The ac dosen't work half the time and make sure you get a couple of keys so you can keep one in the slot to make the air work while you are gone. Its ok if you are college kids but I wouldn't stay there with my family again. There are much better appartment type hotels in the area for a better value. The only positive thing is that the staff was very friendly. Also the location will cost you about $9 everytime you want to take a taxi downtown. The pool was very small and always over crowded couldn't use it. I'd stay here only if I had to.

My boyfriend and I stayed here last month, it would have possibly been ok for a day or so, but we had a terrible time. Both swimming pools are next to main roads so not very tranquil. We had been there 4 days when we went to sleep one night and next morning somebody had broken in through the patio doors, taken all our money, credit-cards mobile phones ect.(we were on the 3rd floor which was the top floor) We had our money cards ect on us as the reception where the safes were closed at 8pm and needed money for that evening and the next day as we had a trip booked for 7.30am When reception opened we went to tell them all they did was give us the number of the police and told us to get intouch with our insurance like it was just a regular occurance, nobody came up to our room to see if there was any damage or to see if we'd like to move rooms ect. We were without money for a day until emergancy money could be sent through the hotel never even asked if they could give us a meal that night in the restraunt downstairs, we went to the supermarket and bought a tin of beans and some bread. As soon as the emergancy money came through we hired a car and started our holiday. When we were in the hotel we had to put up with the noise of planes flying up to Cairns airport. If we'd have known we wouldn't have stayed there, I hope if you're thinking of booking a holiday there you'll think twice pay a bit more and go somewhere else, I'd hate anyone else to have part of their holiday ruined.

We stayed at the Cairns Queenslander for three days this July and ran into a few problems. The apartments are spacious but run down (VERY run down) and the bathroom was only dubiously clean. It was comparatively inexpensive and so we wouldn't have minded those things so much except that the whole room reeked of mildew, to the point that it made you gag. When we asked to be switched, we were told by the staff that it was normal in the tropics and would go away when we opened the windows. We did so for three days with no luck, then talked to two or three other hotels (including another Comfort Inn) and were told that that was NOT normal and that the hotel was not cleaning it adequately. The first night we finally were desperate and asked for a can of lysol, air freshener--anything that the cleaning staff might use to freshen rooms. We were unceremoniously handed a bottle of window cleaner. We requested a room switch and were not allowed to do so. We requested one for the second night and were told there was no availability. We were told the same thing for the third night but then ran into a man down the hall leaving that day and the hotel finally agreed to switch us after they had been "caught in the act". The second room was fine considering the price.
