“Large Rooms. Nice Pools. Location a bit out of the Way”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2010

Had a recent stay at the Lakes Cairns resort. there were 7 in our group of all ages and were fortunate enough to be able to book a 3 bedroom suite. It was a very good size, very clean, with decent beds and linens. The room was right out side the pool area, so it was great for the kids. The complex is rather large behind a closed gate, with four different pools to swim in. Great for teenagers, the main fault is the location, you need a car as it is a 10 minute drive into town. The staff were decent but not amazing, average reception. Thwey need to ofer wifi in the rooms and it should be free, now you have to go to the office and pay.

This was a great place to stay. Sure the room is cleaned every 8 days but we had a two bed apartment huge with full kitchen and laundry in which you can do all you own washing and dry the towels, no problem. There were 5 of us two adults and three kids with tons of room. Only one small problem is the TV needs upgrading to truly be a 4.5star. Pools are fantastic and the bus that takes you around town every hour works extremely well especially for only $20.00 per family, hop on and of as much as you want. We will go back next year

It's not a cheap place to stay - $180 a night for a 1 bedroom - but it came very highly recommended so I booked it for my second trip to Cairns.

Reception staff not great - they made a very embarrassing mixup with my boyfriend's name which they never rectified, and we couldn't check in early. We waiting in the reception as they said they'd let us know as soon as it was free, and even though we saw our bags travelling somewhere, 2pm passed and still no word. At 2.20pm I had to ask them, and it was free - thanks for telling us! Perhaps they thought it was normal for people to sit in reception for two hours????

The resort itself is wonderful - plenty of pools, nice rooms and comfortable. Massive resort with a few places to eat...but don't buy the buffet brekkie, it's not worth it when you can make the same in your apartment!

It's about 30 minute walk into town, not the safest at night, so you can take the bus which departs from a stop about an 8 minute walk away. It isn't frequent, so for this reason you should invest in a hire car for part of your stay unless you plan to enjoy the resort for the entire trip...not a bad idea!

We are returning later this year, and look forward to another enjoyable stay in lovely TNQ.

We stayed for 12 nights, no complimentary pick up at airport although the resort advetised this for people staying for more than 5 nights. Rooms were a decent size but bathroom had mildew around tiles and taps not cleaned properly. Cobwebs hanging off the ceiling. No towel or linen change during whole lenght of stay.

My wife and I are pensioners and the resort management placed us in a room on the top floor of complex as there was no lift this we ment four flights of stairs to navigate each time we left or came back to the room, not a good experience when carrying luggage. The only saving grace was the happy hour for drinks between 5pm and 6pm, however they could include a few more drinks in their happy hour drinks list, beer and wine only was available. Stay well clear of The Lakes Resort especially if you are a pensioner.

We were lead to beleive this was a great place to stay, rooms were great and clean but then the rudeness of staff the location which is to close to airport planes flying over at the early hours of the morning, and a fair hike from town, also noise from pool area made it impossible to sit outside at times . Tried the take away once never again food was greasy and burnt.

we found the resort to be in need of an overhaul, the furniture in our appartment well used and dirty. sheets and towels changed once on 8th day. considerable noise problem being so close to the airport and rail line and the whole place seemed devoid of any holiday atmosphere. Of the 4 pools only one had any heating the others to cold for pleasure.all in all overpriced and over rated. the only plus the staff were very pleasant and helpful. sorry we just did not enjoy it and it did not mesure up to the standard of any good resort in Bali

Interesting to read the reviews about the Lakes and I can see why people love it or hate it. The resort is OK but does lack places to eat, the 1 restaurant is OK but nothing special, but after that you have to go into Cairns unless you fancy the local fish and chip shop. We really disliked the first room we were allocated so upgraded to a 2 bed, 2 bath room deluxe room which overlooked one of the swimming pools and was much better. Enjoyed our stay but there was something missing to make it exceptional. It is close to the airport so some noise but the free shuttle to and from the airport was nice. A good base to explore Cairns with a car.
