“Lovely and a great place to relax”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

We stayed here for a 5 night stay as part of a family celebration. Our apartment overlooked a beautiful pool and bbq area. The apartment was very large with a large balcony area. The spa section of the pool was warm enough to swim in during winter and was a great way to start the day. The other pools looked beautiful but too cold for this time of year. We also tested out the BBQ facilities one night.

Both reception and ground staff were very friendly. I noticed a lot of people mention the tea and coffee and dishwashing supplies were limited but when we ran out we asked reception for more and they were readily supplied.

It was great being slightly away from the centre of Cairns and was a great place to unwind and relax.

We needed a trundle bed for a couple of days of our stay and again this was easily organised.

The tennis court facilities were good and the gym looked well equipped although I didn't get a chance to try it out.

The planes are loud in the evenings and the mornings but I found you got use to them.

I would definitely return to this place again.

Room Tip: Ask for a apartment that overlooks the swimming pool in the Dalrymple block.

We've just come back from a 7-night stay at The Lakes. Great stay. We had a two bedroom apartment which was very large ... Very impressive. It was clean and had all we needed. After reading previous reviews, we knew supplies (washing liquid, toilet paper, coffee, tea, etc) was limited, but there is easy access to a well stocked IGA (plus the resort had stuff as well). The beds were comfy.

The resort was quiet and well kept. We were in a room near the front of the resort and never heard a lot of to-ing and fro-ing of cars. You could hear the water fountain, but it didn't bother us. You can also hear planes ... Plenty of planes ... Taking off from the airport. That didn't bother us either (my boys love planes, so actually added to the appeal). Being winter, most of the pools couldn't be used, but the little heated spa pool was just right for us ... I couldn't keep the kids out! The resort had free wi-fi in the lobby, a bar at the front near reception and the restaurant at the back of the resort was closed. It has a small playground for the kids ... Not that I could convince my kids to forgo the pool for the playground.

All in all, we had a great stay and will be back again in the future.

Neat, clean and tidy. Once the restaurant is back up and running it will help I think. Mobile phone reception is terrible but that is the least of your concerns if on holidays. Friendly, helpful staff.
A few suggestions for short term stayers eg. One week or less: provide more than one bin liner and tea towel. If we are back this way we would definitely stay here again.
Free wifi in main reception area but agin, very slow.

We stayed at The Lakes for 6 nights and we were not impressed. It started with the resort "forgetting" to arrange pick up for us at the airport despite arranging 5 days prior and calling 24 hours to confirm pick up. When we called from the airport to ask where the shuttle was we were told to just catch a taxi it was easier. Not quite the case as we had several bags including a large tri bike bag which is why we arranged the pickup is the first place! Upon checking in the condescending staff member attempted to blame another colleague who didn't book the pickup - nice try but we spoke to YOU, twice! Once in the apartment, a decent walk from reception, bags in tow we found the air con didn't work at all. When we spoke reception about it they were totally uninterested and it was only upon demanding something be done we were reluctantly offered another room to sleep in - we were told it was short term as the guests would be arriving the next day and they were stay longer than us. Eventually the air con was fixed the next day but was not at full capacity only one unit could be used at a time. During our stay each time we went to reception we heard they same "story" about airport transfers being told to more guests. Each interaction we had with the reception staff he was rude and spoke over top of us in an argumentative manner. If the town was not booked out due to the ironman event we would have stayed elsewhere one night into our stay.
Overall the grounds and pools at the resort were nice, apartments were a little run down and in need of maintenance (faulty smoke alarms going off at all hours, exhaust fans not working), minimal supplies, soap/detergents etc, were supplied and the resort was too far from the town centre you would need a car. The customer service was terrible,we are not demanding guests at all but even asking for taxi numbers (Telstra mobile service was nonexistent in our apartment) bike hire places, bus details we were not helped at all- the grounds staff were more helpful!
We will be returning to Cairns but will not be staying here again and we will recommend others do the same.

Stunning resort with beautifully maintained grounds. The staff/ activities planner were most helpful. This resort has many top quality facilities - lagoon pool, mini sand/ beach for the little ones, waterfalls, spa, gym, games room, mini shop at the reception area (inc alcohol sales)restaurant and even a bar too! (which, just quietly, was a big hit with us) We were here a few years back for our honeymoon - and we chose this resort based on previous reviews. Our apartment was 3 bedrooms and we our courtyard opened right onto the pool side - which was a fantastic bonus. The inside of the apartment was faultless, from the air con, to the fans, to the linen, to the comfy beds - everything was in perfect order. The kitchen was very well appointed and was used each day by us. The windows, sliding doors etc were all double glazed and as such we heard no noise form the pool area when these doors were closed. We travelled as a group of 5 (yes, on our honeymoon lol) as my husbands family were here with us from the UK for our wedding, so it only seemed the right thing to do having them to join us in a tropical paradise as this one was. Each and every one of us LOVED staying here. The place is super relaxing and not too far out of Cairns central - a very cheap shuttle bus ran every 30mins when we were there and was super convenient! If you love quality, bang for your buck and a simply superb resort (with kids too - they certainly cater for families) Then this IS your place to stay in Cairns!!!
We now have a 3 year old and plan to go back very very soon with him!!

Room Tip: Families would be best asking for a poolside apartment (so you don't have lug everything through...

Superb resort, beautiful gardens & four stunning pools & a very large spa to chose from. We stayed for 5 days in a two bedroom apt, very close to the airport and a 5 min drive to central city. When I booked I asked for a ground floor apartment if possible, which I was given, the apartment was great, the pool was right outside our patio. Very quiet and secure. During the week while we were there we had the pools to ourselves most of the time. Definitely the only place we will stay at if we go back to Cairns. We stayed at 2 other places in the Daintree & the last night in Cairns before flying out but these were no match for The Lakes.
the only fault was there was no wifi.
