“The best hotel I've ever been (so far)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2012

Very fancy hotel, good food, 3 swimming pools, tennis court, jacuzzi, sauna. Close to airport, attractions such as coral reef, Kuranda Scenic Railway, tropical zoo, etc.
Very good for family holiday or newlyweds. Very quiet and pleasant place, with no nightlife. Recommend for families and people who want to relax. I really like stay in this hotel and will definitely go back there again.

Very spacious and plenty of storage space in the two-bedroom apartment. What was disappointing was that the fans in the bedrooms did not work except at full speed and could not be fixed during our stay of one week. Also, the Internet was supposed to be accessed from our rooms but could not and we had to use theReception area for that. The pools were very nice. The undercover parking was cramped and very difficult to drive into and out of due to a lack of space caused by the sensor post placed in the middle of a very narrow driveway and a nearby lamppost made things even more awkward.

Room Tip: Pick a Ground Floor room so you don't have to carry your luggage up flights of steps.

This is a miniature town-like cluster of 16 apartment buildings with complex facilities (if you can honestly call them that). Only a percentage of the apartments are rented out by The Lakes and the rest seem to be privately owned & managed. We were disappointed that this was not a hotel style resort as I believe if it was it would have been better managed.
Convenient location to airport, shuttle bus service to airport and city available. Cleanest unit I have ever walked into - a credit to housekeeping ! Very spacious 2 bed unit in Dalrymple apartments (this particular building has an elevator unlike other buildings). On-site Italian restaurant surprisingly good but expensive ($100 for 2 adults & 2 kids meals).
That was the good ... now for the bad ...
* Wireless internet purchased at The Lakes did not work in our apartment and only worked near the front reception
* The 'spa pools' are not heated - stone cold. I believe they have turned off the heating for cost cutting ... we are in the cold season now but they don't care
* Tiles missing throughout the 3 pools
* The sauna ... what a drama... you have to leave a $20 deposit at reception to get the key then hoof it there and back. Then you only get an hour to use it.
* The gym ... no treadmill, a/con not working.. 2 broken exercise bikes ... one rower and a few weights. No way to turn on the tv.
* Tennis court charge to use - $ 10
* Games room is a con. We came here thinking there was a games room our kids could use ... instead we find a 5th floor walk-up full of coin machines. $1-2 per game. WTF ?!?! It comes complete with a coin dispensing machine in the games room, stains all over the carpets and what appeared to be suspect 'brown marks' on the curtains.
* The 'playground' ... is 1 slide sandwiched between 2 buildings. My 4 yo didn' t even want to go in there
* Each room has a safe .... but you have to pay $3.50 per day to have a key to it
* The bathroom fans didn't work
* The bathroom & toilet doors don't have locks
* Nickelodeon didn't work for a day of our stay
* $17.95 to watch an in-room movie ! And no DVD player provided. (Absolute con considering they promote their 'cable tv & movies)
* After specifically requesting and confirming a ground floor apartment we were given a 1st floor apartment. We then got allocated another building that had a lift (Dalrymple building). BEWARE OF THE MITCHELL building ... it only has stairs - no elevator !
* When we enquired about a rental car the lady at the counter pointed at a brochure and told me to call them. We sorted out a car no thanks to The Lakes even though there is apparently a direct call phone in reception.
OVERALL ... there was one girl in reception who was very helpful, and the housekeeping staff were fantastic, but the few motivated staff here are badly let down by management and the lame, run down facilities and rip-off policies. I feel totally conned by their website which talked up their 'spa pools', playground & games room. This is why we chose this place ... I should have listened to all the bad reviews this place got !!!!
Nice apartment but the rest gets a thumb down so in hindsight we may as well have just stayed at any apartment right in the heart of Cairns as the attraction if the facilities proved to be useless.
Won't be returning here and don't recommend this place unless you can pick it up for less than $150 per night.

This was our 10th and final hotel on our east coast trip from Sydney to Cairns. A 2 night stop here to hand the car back, do the Kuranda skyrail and train and then catch our flight to Singapore for a night before home to the UK. Check in was very swift and the room was very clean and comfortable. The complex is in a gated community and is a mixture of holiday apartments and privately owned apartments. The staff were very helpful and arranged the taxi etc for us to the airport on our last day. The location is quite a walk from town as we did this after handing the car back at the hire company in central Cairns, It took approx 1 & 3/4hr but we were not pushing it and stopped along the way to admire the esplanade which stretches almost from the centre out to Lily lane which is approx a block away from the resort. The staff gave us details of the local bus service which picked up from the road end and we used this to visit town for approx $11 return for 2. The bus driver even collected us when we had mistakenly picked the wrong stop when we were looking to return from town. Great service!! We chose to use the on-site restaurant one evening and this was excellent. An all round good resort with beaches by the pools even though it is a bit out of town.

Tidy property, but must have car as outside of cairns! This property is ideal for families. Too quiet etc for anyone else. 1 restaurant, but not always open and no bar but 3 or 4 lovely pools. The buildings are all fairly close together so noise does bounce around.

Rooms are beautiful, come with everything and very modern and lovely and comfy, the beds are hard though but nice that you get a king size ! There are lovely various pools that you can walk to within the resort, very luxurious.
Perfect for wanting peace and serenity and nobody else around but for us, we love to sight see and feel the culture/lifestyle of where we are visiting and this is not it.. its fairly far if you have no hire car (we did thankgod) and spent most our time from early morning til late eve on long drives out, felt like it was a bit of a waste of money for us only because we weren't there much. If you like to be a part of the town/city you're visiting, this isn't the place for you, but its heavenly if you want to just block out the world and unwind as it is really a beautifully designed place.
