“Happy Travels”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

We stayed at the Reef Gateway apartments for 4 nights from the 14th - 18th August. The room was exactly what we were hoping for, considering we had out 5 month old son on the journey with us. We were given a townhouse at the rear of the building, which was quiet & made getting everything to and from the car a breeze. The room was spacious & the bed was comfortable. Having a washing machine & dryer made our holiday that much easier with our baby. We were close enough to the esplanade to enjoy the nightlife, but far enough away to avoid the noise. The location was a perfect base for our travels and close to the Airport. The owners were very friendly, although, we were so busy enjoying the perfect Cairns weather, that we didn't have a chance to speak to them very much. I have taken 1 star off for just a couple of small things
1. Having a baby, it was very important to be able to use the bath, however, when we went to bath our baby on our 1st night, we realised the plugs provided didn't fit the bath tub, there were no replacement plugs in the room. (This was nothing a $3 plug from Woolworths didn't fix & we left it for the next people to enjoy).
2. There was rubbish left in the bathroom from the previous occupants, which while did not inconvenience us, is something you don't expect to see.
3. It wasn't warm enough to use Air Conditioning, but was warm enough to use the Pedestal fan provided, the only problem being, there was no practical power point to plug the fan into! Not keen on plugging it in directly next to our faces while we slept, we just went without. Possibly an extension cord would assist in the future
All up however, it was a fantastic place to stay & we will be back in the future!

Room Tip: Rooms towards the back are nice & quiet.

I booked direct for a 2BR appartment so that my daughter could sleep over at night as she was working till late at the hospital nearby and I made this clear when booking. I was given a reduced rate for advanced purchase and 2 nights but when I arrived $28 was added because 2 people were using a 2 bedroom apartment - ridiculous. Do not book direct with this facility as they do not honour their advised price and with the extra charge I could have done better elsewhere. The apartment is average but it would be nice if the lounge curtains were put on their hooks. Our rooms had a pleasant view over the pool but mosquitos were a problem. However, useful provision of things like gladwrap and alfoil

Room Tip: View over the pool to East is best and not on ground floor but have insect repellant

Dear Janet Sansoni,

I recalled your Booking on the Computer after reading your Review. You booked a 1 Bedroom Superior Unit for 1 (one) person at a price of $135.00 per night directly from our Website. As when you arrived there it was clear there were 2 persons we obligingly offered you a 2 bedroom Unit at a very low revised rate of $149.00 per night.
Had you booked the 2 Bedroom Unit directly it would have been $159.00 per night. Therefore, we still gave you a discount. of $20.00
Kind Regards
Russ E

Upon arrival we were told our unit was "at the back - whick was fine -- the unit was not really prepared for us having prebooked for our party - we were charged for internet wiich was advertised as free on the website when booked.
There is a tour booking desk thats helpful.
The unit was straight and clean - had ant problem running toilet - shower - and washing machine
THERE WAS NO DISHWASHER althought there was tablet there in kitchen.
Had to buy our own cooking pans the pans are OLD and tired and not to a good standard.

There were not enough pillows in the double room (only 3 pillows ?) that made for a not comfortable stay

the lounge suite was not a clean standard and carried a very unpleasant odour -
Very noisy block also.

I believe there must be nicer units as per the photos - this is not how our party found this accom - there definitely rooms that need URGENT attention !

did the job while we did the tourism Cairns trip

The Reef Gateway was exactly what we were looking for in Cairns. The 2 bedroom apartment had laundry machines in the unit, and a full kitchen which allowed us to cook our meals. THe unit was clean and quiet and had a balcony and on-site BBQ facilities. We arrived after 8 pm and we were able to call the manager, Russ, who came out to greet us. The unit came with a "starter pack" of things like toilet paper and dish soap which was perfect for the week we were there. Russ and his wife were very helpful in helping us choose the best tours, and even booked the tours for us with pick-up right outside the hotel. The location is great, in a neighbourhood with stores close by and close to the airport.

Room Tip: Give Russ a call and tell him what you are looking for.

We've been to this Apartment complex now three times in the past three years, and it just seems to get better each time. The managers - Pam and Russ Elliott - take a professional, friendly and oh-so-helpful approach to their dealings with their clientele, which may explain why they have so many return guests. We had a two-bedroom apartment which was spotless, well-appointed, spacious and enjoying a large balcony overlooking the pool. The air-conditioning, even in winter, was welcome. But you go to this apartment complex mainly because of its great location and value-for-money. First, the location. It's not in the heart of the Cairns CBD but an easy 10-15 minute level-ground stroll away. It is directly opposite the huge, brand new, Cairns Hospital, so it's also in a quiet part of town, and, at the back, looking out over a giant green swathe of playing fields and trees. There's a convenience store and also a restaurant (Indonesian cuisine) on the right-hand corner diagonally opposite the main entrance and, at the rear entrance, the celebrated Cock & Bull Pub and great-value Restaurant on the next right hand corner diagonally up the road, and 50 metres distant. The local transport is 50 metres away in the next street and Russ or Pam will gladly arrange taxis and tours. We'd previously stayed in a number of hotels and other apartment buildings but would now not consider going anywhere else while in Cairns. The self-contained apartments at Reef Gateway have all the facilities and inclusions you'll need for a satisfying and supremenly comforatable stay in Cairns.

Room Tip: If you don't mind steep-ish stairs, #8 on the first floor is very good, as also #4 on the groun...

We stayed at Reef Gateway for 3 nights. First of all the room size is enormous for the price we were charged. We were in their duplex. The room was very clean and filled with light and character. The only downside (minor) was that the shower and toilet is downstairs whilst the bedrooms are on the top floor. This may be a problem for those who need to use the toilet during the night, especially if you have older guests in your party. Of course for others it is no issue if you sleep though the night. The property owners, Russ and Pam are extremely friendly. Russ is also very knowledgeable with the tours and the operators so it is best to get his advice whilst booking for tours. (See my other review for Sunreef and Billy Tea). The only reason I did not give this a full 5 star is that internet is not included in the charges and secondly there are no decent breakfast places around (at least we could not find) if you had an early morning start (like 7 am). The main Esplanade area and the restaurants are a short 10 minute walk away so if you can walk it then it should be no problem. The washer and dryer in the apartment is an added bonus.

Room Tip: If you don't mind the toilet downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs, choose the duplex. They are r...
