“Well located hotel with great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2009

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights and were given a suite (705) on the 7th floor. The room was very large with two very comfortable double beds, a lounge area and great bathroom. There was great view to both the mountains and the bay from the generous verandah. Yes I agree that the rooms are a little dated but ours was perfectly comfortable and clean and well equipped with an espresso machine and all the usual bathroom personal care items. Our housekeeper was delightful and kept our room in great shape and was quick to understand our movements so as not to schedule cleaning while we were in. We had breakfast in the hotel each morning and although the buffet is not as good as we have had in other hotels, they prepare eggs to order and the buffet did have enough range of items to please us.

The pool area is great and the ebar beside the pool offers casual dining which we found good. We also ordered room service on one night and it was delivered hot and promptly.

The location is fantastic for getting out and about and the staff all courteous and helpful. We would book this hotel again in a flash if we return to Cairns.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2009

My wife and I stayed 4 nights in May 2009. She was attending a conference for a couple of those days whilst I did my own thing. We stayed in room 533 which was spacious and well placed for views over the water. Everything in the room (including the bathroom) was as we would have hoped and it was an enjoyable stay. The restaurant on the ground floor was good value for money but you are close enough to walk down the Esplanade if you feel like eating out. One small but useful issue for us (with 3 mobile phones, a laptop/notebook, and camera) was the abundence of powerpoints to keep everything charged - very helpful. The only issue was the repeated failure of the electronic doorkey - we had to 'recharge' it about 10 times in 5 days - very annoying (and we noticed others with the same problems). The hotel could probably do with an update but as long as it makets itself as 3 stars and charges accordingly we would recommend.

We spent 5 nights at the Tradewinds, what a great position over looking the water, the EBar has wonderful food or you can walk to the many eating places down the street, hospital nice and close, yes I had a four hour stay, even the doctors and nurses are amazing, I could go on forever about the people, the hotel, the food, if you visit Cairns, stay at Tradewinds, yes it is older than the others, but she is grand old lady and full of charm.

A friend and I tought we would get away for a week and discover the Far North. We chose Rydges Tradewinds for its great location and great prices. From the first few minutes in the hotel I was sold. A very friendly japanese gentleman opened the doors for us and collected our luggage before we even realised! The lovely red headed receptionist was very refreshing after our very early flight. She turned out to be one of the highlights of our stay! We arrived at the hotel around 10am and expected to be turned away, but she told us for a small fee of $10 a night she could upgrade us to a room with ocean views and get us in a room straight away! what a relief!

The next say this same young woman was on the tour desk and was so helpful. She helped us arange a reef tour, rain forest tour and even sent my friend sky diving! (I chickened out!) Every time we saw her she asked how our last adventure was and gave us great advice for what to do with all our spare time!

The location of the hotel is great! the close proximity to the esplanade is is big plus! We loved going for walks along the boardwalk in the morning and walking along the eslpanade at night deciding where to eat! the only taxi we hired our whole stay was to and from the airport as you can walk everywhere from the hotel!

The only downfall, which I am sure they are well aware of is that the hotel does look very tired and run down on the outside, my stomach sunk a little when the taxi pulled up but the fabulous staff and great location made up for it. Oh and was a little bit disappointed when the tim tam i our mini bar expried 6 months ago!

There were a few waitors in the bar who obviously didnt want to be there but the lovely supervisor was great and after a few afternoons she remembered what we liked to drink! It was great to walk into the hotel and see every staff member in the lobby with a smile on thier face, then again if I lived in a place as beautiful as Cairns I would be smilling too!

The hotel was well located - couple of blocks to restaurants along the boardwalk, then a couple more to main shopping streets. Rooms were large, bathrooms also large. TVs not so large! Nice pool area and great views from the rooms and balconies.
The staff I encountered were friendly. I stayed for a total of 5 nights on 4 occasions in just over a week - the hotel stored my extra bag each time I went for my small side trip.
I was expecting a bit more atmosphere I guess for a 4 star hotel - there was nobody on the door with a friendly smile - no offers of help with baggage etc. Unless you sought out a staff member you were left to your own devices. The aircon in the rooms also didn't help as despite the 30+ temps outside - inside on low the aircon was too cold with no mechanism to change temperature - only fan speed. It is also a large hotel with lots of rooms which may have contributed to the lack of a homey feel. I would recommend the hotel if the price is right though.

I stayed here for two nights on a business trip recently. I had a nice ocean view, even from the second floor and a view over pool and gardens. At night the view is really nice with the garden lit up with flares. The room was very well maitained. The housekeeper who came to my room was very friendly, as were the staff in the bar.

The bar is great, with a nice atmosphere and view of the pedestrian traffic of the esplanade boardwalk. I would definitely stay here again, for business or holiday.

Mainly a leisure trip booked via the internet. We had an excellent room with great views overlooking the ocean. We only encountered friendly, efficient and helpful staff. Will definitely return and recommend this hotel to others.
