“Decent but needing renovation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

It is not in the centre of activities. It is a good 10 minutes walk to the activity hub - market, casino, the pier and the restaurants. But for the same reason it is quiet. But then Cairns is hardly a big city. Property is unassuming and plain. The lobby is just big enough with a few computers at one corner where one can use the paid internet. There is also a small outlet that stocks literally everything a person may need in an emergency and also offers tours for persons who like to do last minute reservations.

There are 3 lifts so one is always available without having to wait for long. It is a popular group hotel as it offers value for money. I am not sure how the normal rooms are because the room I was given appeared to be quite big. The room was well furnished having all the amenities one looks for. The cupboards were roomy with enough hangers, steam press and press board.

The toiled was clean and met the expectations. Only complaint was that the rooms had seen better days and now looked a bit tired. Hopefully the management is planning to renovate the rooms soon. There is a balcony with two chairs with a view of the sea. A great place to sit in the morning or late evening and enjoy the peace and calm while having a hot cup.

One problem that I faced was that the bathroom ceiling started leaking in the night so imagine my surprise when I woke in the morning to find the bathroom floor flooded. But it was soon repaired and then on did not face any re-occurance. The other is that there were a few missing bulbs. And remained missing during my complete stay.

The breakfast spreas was simple but wholesome. Though a bit of imagination and variety would have enhanced the experience. Not much for vegetarian except for the bread and cereals. The fruits were there but had no taste. Not clear why so.

There were two dishes (rice and curry) for the Indians but it would be better not to sample it. Apparently the chef must have be using some cooking book as guide. The complete spread was the same every day with no change in the dishes - quite boring to look forward if you are staying for more than 2 days.

Overall a good hotel with a great view. But the management to be serious regarding renovation before the property loses its charm.

I stayed here for 3 days in Febraury2012. It's location is good as it is very near to esplanade.
Balcony has beautiful sea view and the staff was friendly.
But the rooms are of old style and also restaurant does not provide many options for vegetarians.

Positives:
1. Nice location
2. Friendly staff

Negatives:
1. Old style rooms
2. Breakfast has limited options and presentation is also not very good

This is an average resort. Rooms are not the nicest but they are decent enough. The view of from our room was of the beach so that was nice. Every room has a balacony which is nice to just go relax on. Pool is nice and big enough. This place is about a 5min walk to the centre of cairns where all the restaurants are. The price of the rooms are very reasonable.

Rydges Tradewinds is still a great place to stay, i have been staying at Tradewinds for the past 4 years and the service is still top class, the resturant serves up great food and the resturant staff were very friendly. Room rates are still competative and if you are a Priority guest member you get all the benifits associated with the program.
The only thing they could improve is the breakfast buffett food it was cold, not a big issue.

Room Tip: King ocean view room is the pick you get to wake up looking at a peacefull ocean setting.

Came in about 4pm - rooms pleasant - totally acceptable; went down for dinner in the pool/outdoor area. Lovely meal. Atmosphere delightful. Staff most pleasant. First choice if in Cairns in the future.

Stayed here for 2 nights in late Sep. 2012. The property is located right downtown - very convenient to shopping and restaurants. The room was updated and very nice with newish furniture, granite in the bathroom, big TV, etc. My room had a view of both the coast/ocean and the mountains. For $130/night or so, it was a good value. The hotel facilities were nice - a big pool with hot tub(s). My only gripes are the additional fee for wi-fi (seems to be standard in Australia) and the surcharge for credit cards. Would stay here again for sure.

We stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed every minute. The hotel is in a great location right on the esplanade and across the road from the boardwalk. Our room was clean and tidy but the bathroom could do with a makeover. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We overlooked the pool area which was well supervised at all times. The bar area could have done with more tables and seating for pre-dinner drinks and if the hotel is really serious about priority awards then breakfasts should also be included as 'food'. We dined several times in the hotel's restaurant and the food was excellent. We would have no hesitation in staying here again. Good value for money!

Dear Patrick M

Thank you for your kind comments.

We are reviewing the seating the bar area over the next few months and hopefully next time you stay there will be more room to sit and enjoy that incredible view.
