I will start this review by saying that I have very mixed feelings for this hotel as it is not quite like any other Shangri-La hotels I have been to. That being said it is in a very good location on the boardwalk of the marina and therefore right at the wharf where you need to be to catch any boat tours and as you are right above the boardwalk there are many restaurants below where you can just stroll along until you see one you like. Now I have read a few reviews in regards to noise from the below restaurants/bar and I did not experience this and we were right above them facing the marina in a Club room. I found the balcony doors quite soundproof but if you are sensitive to that then you may opt for a garden view room.
We arrived later at night and we checked in no problems (however i did notice in the lobby that their chandelier light installation had many globes burnt out) but when we entered our room it did have a very strong mold smell however it did seem to dissipate after a few days either that or we got used to it but my first impression was that it had that moldy overused apartment hotel feel instead of cosy or ambient.
We were also told that we would have sparkling wine and a fruit plate in our room upon arrival but it was not and had to call down for it, a small thing but the devil is in the details.
I also believe a "fruit plate" should be lovely fruits sliced and cut and served as such, not just chucked in a bowl in its grown state with a fork and knife for me to do it myself. Who eats kiwi with a knife and fork??
As said we chose the Club room as we always find these better value. The room overall was nice, a large bathroom with a separate tub and shower with open glass looking through into the room.
Therefore for privacy a separate w/c room.
They had a decent sized closet with the standard 6-8 hangers provided.
They provided robes and slippers.
The bed was comfortable although I do not like seeing other peoples hair amongst my bed linens.
I do agree with the reviews in regards to housekeeping and do not believe that management has properly addressed this issue. I felt the rooms lack of general upkeep and therefore all the finishes in the room had a bit of run down feel. They could really do with a refresher and full on clean. I.E Walls that don't have marks, lacklustre paint yellowing, desk finish looking worn, bathroom tiles resealed and brightened up (my bathroom countertop looked the powder had been sprinkled over it and left some shapes such as soap etc.)
The movie selection was good however $15 aud for a movie.
The view was fantastic of the marina and the balcony very roomy with a nice sleek timber.
However being a designer myself I found the outdoor furniture to be to much form over function and the outdoor benches are in desperate need of a cushion at the very least. They are more uncomfortable than a park bench and akin to sitting on a table. Not to mention if you are wearing white be very careful as to not have any of the wood stain to leach off onto your clothes.
The people who chose this obviously never planned to sit on them themselves.
No problems with noise.
They did however let us have a late check out of 4pm which was very accommodating .
The pool was nice having some cocktails poolside. The drink service could be quicker though and the overall pool area again needs a refresh.
Now the club lounge only open certain hours and believe me they pack up on the very second of closing time regardless of how many people are there.
To me the room was small, staff non attentive and a very poor selection of canapés and mainly geared to the 90% Chinese clientele.
Breakfast in the club was sorry but absolutely disgusting. Boxed scrambled eggs that tasted fishy, canned beans and bacon and some melon.
We also had breakfast downstairs in the main area. Bigger buffet until i realised that it was all asian cuisine geared for the chinese guests and oh ya just over to the right a small selection of eggs, bacon and you could have eggs to order. This however made up a much smaller selection of the breakfast buffet. We also were told by one of the staff there that breakfast was $35 or if you were staying at the hotel that it cost $45............really?? We could not quite figure that out why it would cost you more if you were a guest.
The club from room service was very nice and the pizza was terrible.
We also asked front desk for a towel because we were off on a boat tour and were informed on our itinerary to take one from the pool or our room but seeing as though we were downstairs thought we would just ask front desk where we were told that the charge would be $4 or $5.
Shops is the hotel, no convienance store within and a few straggling shops but nothing that made sense.
Check out went perfect.
So overall I found it a very nice location and I was mostly happy with the hotel.
Would I stay there again?? Not sure, it would be nice to see them embrace and represent Australia which is why people are coming there. Not represent another country culture.
That is the whole point I am travelling. I am from Canada but i don't travel around the world and expect people to do a big Canada dance and say eh after there sentences and serve me maple syrup to make me happy, I just expect to be comfortable and treated well but not at the expense of others.
Biggest down side was the constant rudeness, pushing and lack of elevator etiquette by other guests. Obviously no fault to the hotel but maybe an elevator attendant would be able to curb the insanity there.
