“Good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2010

We stayed in a one bedroom ocean front suite (fourth floor, 405) and found the room very clean and comfortable. We could not detect any musty smell at all, as some previous reviews have said. The suite contains a small kitchenette with cooktop..very basic, but great for doing your own breakfast, although it does not have a toaster (maybe because of smoke detector false alarms). The bathroom was huge with shower above the bath. The best part though was the full length verandah with access from the bedroom and living room, and great views across the Esplanade. It was also an easy 5 minute stroll to the nearby restaurants. We would stay here again, as price was right for a budget hotel on the Esplanade so close to everything. A taxi to the airport will cost approx $18.00

The room had two large beds and a very large balcony where we spent a couple of hours at night, drink in hand. Yes, it's outdated, there is a damp smell and everything gets damp if you don't leave your air-conditioner on full-time (that's tropical Queensland though), and there were a few tiny bugs here and there but let's not forget this is a hotel on the esplanade, just a nice stroll along the beach/mudflat to the CBD and it didn't cost the earth!! There were plenty of free tea and coffee + milk in the room and all was cleaned daily (and supplies of coffee/tea replenished) and left spotless. It's not a "nice" hotel you'd recommend to all your friends but if you are on a budget but still want to be in the heart of Cairns, this hotel may be right for you.

In no way shape or form would I recommend this hotel to anyone. It is listed as 4* maybe in 1980!!!! when it obviously got the stars but there should be a law against this rating. You could smell the mould as soon as you got out the lift, the rooms were old, a bit dirty, the railing on the balcony was far too low and wobbly, the only reason I stayed was it was late, we were tired after our flight and I couldn't be bothered complaining. Plus we were met with a laugh when we asked if room service was still available and told "we sent them home because we're not busy". My advice, if I had known, I would have spent the $50 or so more and stayed at the Mantra or Rydges next door.

My husband & I stayed in a standard room (6th floor) for 8 nights. We were impressed as soon as we entered the room. The view was fabulous - mix of mountains, street scenes and, of course, the ocean and park. Two double beds (very comfortable) - the one we used. Very peaceful at night so sleeping was easy. So good to be able to choose between a bath or a shower. Room smelt fresh and everything was provided. Daily we received fresh towels, toiletries and biscuits. The cleaning service was superb. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Could not fault anything. Even the 'eat and run' breakfast at $5.50 pp was more than ample.... unlimited juice, toast selection, tea/coffee (all fresh). Thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and the walk into Cairns CBD on the boardwalk was a pleasure. Unreservably, we would stay there again (which we will). At $70.00 per night, it was wonderful value. Thank you, Cairns Plaza Hotel staff.
PS Can't believe the bad reviews. What planet are they from!

We stayed at this hotel in April for 4 nights and the rooms smelt of damp as soon as you entered the room.
This I could cope with, however when I went out to look at the swimming pool I fell flat on my back on concrete as the area obviously had not been cleaned. It had been raining for a few days however there were no signs and very poor lighting.
I went to reception straight away to complain and my clothes were all dirty and black from the back. I asked for washing powder and they said they would charge to the account. I asked for the manager to be made aware and for it to be sorted as had it been an elderly visitor they could have done some serious damage. 24 hours later I still had not heard from the manager and had to contact them myself. They were very unhelpful.
Very poor service.

We stayed here for 2 nights, and probably won't go back, unless major refurbishment is done.
Our 3rd floor apartment was spacious, with 2 balconies overlooking the ocean. The furnishings were adequate, the bed comfortable, and the bathroom quite satisfactory with a bath and shower over.
The kitchen was disappointing in that the cupboards were not very clean, the fridge small and only just managed to keep food cool, and there was no toaster! When I enquired about this at the front desk I was told that the room had a hotplate, wouldn't that do?
Yes, the carpets were old, and the air conditioner had to be on all the time to combat the musty smell, and the elevator didn't smell particularly fresh, but it is an old building in need of refurbishment, and the price we paid ($110 a night) for its position on the Esplanade was not exhorbitant. It was very quiet at night, but I don't think there were many guests there, unusual in the school holidays.
It was pleasant to sit outside on the balcony and watch the ocean. We were able to catch up with recent movies on the free movie channel.
We didn't go to the restaurant as we frequented a particularly good Thai restaurant 10mins walk away, but noticed that the dining room at the Plaza didn't seem to have many diners.

We stayed here based on reviews from TA and were very pleased. We had a one bedroomed suite overlooking the pool. Our son slept on the sofabed and was very comfortable. Our room had a doulbe bed and ensuite shower and a bath. The small kitchenette was adequate for us. The hotel pool was great for a dip and there is a fantastic play park opposite if you have younger children especially...it had water fountains to play in, BBQ area, play frames etc. and was very clean. Cairns Plaza is about a 10 minute walk into the main shopping/restaurant area. We enjoyed the walk along the beachfront boardwalk. The beach is non existant and is really a mudflat so there are loads of water birds to see and crabs everywhere. Look out for the pelicans.
Because there is no beach there is a FANTASTIC lagoon pool at the end of the boardwalk. YOU HAVE TO GO! It is surrounded by lawn so sunbathe on and at the weekends there is a stage set up and local musicians serenade you while you lounge about. Just fab. Also many BBQ stations scattered around.
Cairns is nice enough. The indoor market is fun in the evening. There is a big Wolworths supermarket on the street behind the indoor market (just walk through the market, out the back and look to the left, you'll see Woolworths on the opposite side of the road...sorry I can't remember the street name)
But mainly Cairns is an ideal base to do trips from. You must go to Tjapukai (the Aboriginal Cultural Centre). Book an excursion at the hotel. We went with Skyrail which combines Tjapukai with the Kuranda Skyway and Railway. It is an amazing day out. They drop you at the Skyway terminal. But head straight to Tjapukai centre which is next door and you will be in time for the start of the first show and then you are lead smoothly from one to the next activity. You see dancing, learn about bush medicine and how to play a didgeridoo. Then you get to throw a boomerang and a spear. At the end we got to do some aborigini style painting on pebbles.
Then go to the Skyway and ride the cable car to Kuranda. There are a couple of stops along the way for you to walk in the rainforest. You get an hour or so in Kuruanda for lunch and shopping. We has a fab lunch at the Frog Cafe...great views too. Then head for the Train station for the most wonderful steam train ride down the mountain. Make sure you get some photos of the train going round the bends...quite spectacular. You arrive back at the Terminal and the tour driver drops you backa t your hotel. So easy. So worthwhile.
We also went on an overnight trip with On the Wallaby. They are just fantastic and although set up for backpackers they gave us and our son there room for 4 (2 bunks). It was a fun change for us and a new experience for a 10yr old having to help with washing up and sitting down to eat with total strangers. The whole trip was amazingly fun and if you get Bart as your guide you will have a blast. Do't really want to say too much as it will spoil the trip for you lest to say we loved every minute of it. Beware though if you are travel sick as there is a very windy road to go up (and down on the way home) 230+ bends. Take some pills!!
