“Top service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2008

Stayed there for two nights in an ocean view room on top floor. Arrived an hour before offical check-in time and was served by a French (?) lady and immediately allocated a room to us. She recognised my Sofitel Privlege card and organised welcome drinks, gift pack (tropical fruit), free newspaper and late check-out - what a service!

We had free valet parking and a potter to take our bags into our room. Room consisted of a king size bed, an analogue TV, small balcony - enough for a table and two chairs. Bathroom was clean and had a bath tub and a combined shower sauna/steam room! Never been to a hotel with a sauna/steam room before - what a surprise!

In the evening, we were also offered turn down and got given bottled water and chocolate.

Hotel is located next to the casino, reef terminal and a stone throw away from the CBD.

Package also included breakfast which was nice but not spectacular.

Overall, it was a very pleasent stay with excellent service.

We spent four nights here in November and found it a great place to stay and ideally situated for all the bars, restaurants and shops (with a couple of decent, well-priced restaurants itself).
From the moment we checked in (and check-in is like at one of those fancy boutique hotels where it's at a small wooden table and not like at a chain at all), we were impressed with the place. Our standard room was a decent size and we had a balcony which overlooked the pool a couple of floors below and beyond that, the town and the sea front (which we could just about see). The bed was fabulously comfortable which was useful as there's plenty to fill the days in Cairns and you'll be exhausted come the evening.
Although we didn't use it, the shower doubled as a steam room and bath featured a jacuzzi. There was also rather an unusual sliding door arrangement between the bedroom and bathroom which enabled you to sit in the bath as though you were in the bedroom! So you could watch tv or talk to someone on the balcony, whilst having a bath! Not the sort of thing a Brit would do, I assure you.
Finally, from our room on the sixth floor, there was very little noise either from the street in the distance or from neighbouring rooms. All-in-all, a great place to stay if you're holidaying in Cairns

Stayed at the Sofitel Reef Casino in Cairns before and after a liveaboard diving trip. I wish we had more time in Cairns since we did not have a chance to visit all the local spots we were interested in. I will stay here when I return to rectify that situation.

I was not certain what to expect when I booked the Sofitel. I was concerned that it would be all Casino, all noise, all the time but was very pleasantly surprised. The room was attractive, well furnished, and very comfortable. Any noise is not from the Casino or the entertainment venues.

I did not try the $30/p breakfast since that seemed a little steep. Right across the street is a fantastic little coffee shop called The Sweet Bistro that makes rich cappuccino, fresh squeezed juice, and delicious breakfast for half the price. Try the eggs benedict.

The staff here completely understands what fine service is about and goes out of their way to provide it. We did have road noise on the third floor which was a recurring problem on the trip, regardless of how many stars the facility had. Ear plugs are now standard travel equipment.

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable, excellent service.
  • Disliked — Street noise

The Sofitel Reef Casino exceeded my expectations. We stayed in a Spa Suite on the corner of the hotel, overlooking the bay. The room was large and airy with louvres on all the sliding doors leading out onto the 'wrap-around' balcony.
The room was clean and while there were a few very small indications of age it was overall very sophisticated and comfortable.
The bathroom was large with double basins, beautiful double spa bath overlooking the marina and a very large shower.
Room service was quick and the menu was quite good - they have 24 hour room service.
You could request to have your room serviced anytime up until 9pm.
The view from the room overlooked the industrial wharf area before the marina and beautiful mountains. That was a bit of an eyesore but unavoidable I guess. We didn't mind.
The staff were helpful and attentive in every aspect and the hotel was surprisingly extremely quiet even though it is next to the casino.
I would definitely reccommend and will stay there again.

Stayed at the Sofitel for two nights in a Superior King room (ie a standard room), which is a lovely room - nicely furnished with neutral colours, white plantation shutters, great king size bed, good sized marble bathroom with twin sinks and a separate toilet. There are shutters separating the bathroom from the bedroom, which you can slide away so you can watch tv from the spa bath... great!

Staff were all polite and pleasant. All in all, a very nice experience and nothing negative to say about it at all.

We spent 4 days in Cairns at the Sofitel, which is currrently undergoing renovations. The main inconvenience was the tour vans had to pick us up across the street at the Hilton (2 minute walk) as opposed to the front of the Sofitel. The breakfast buffets for two included in our hotel room A$230/night made this a superior value when compared to comparable rooms at the Shangri-La, and Hiltion, a block or two away. We chose the king bed single room with city views over the corner suite A$330/night with views of the ocean and city because there was not alot more usable space we spent nominal amounts of time during the day in the room to appreciate the views. We spent one late afternoon at the pool, which was quite nice, but sparsely attended.

We had looked on www.wotif.com and tripadvisor.com to choose this hotel. When it came to negotiating best room deals, we found contacting the hotels and speaking to knowldegable reservationists directly provided the best information (over hotel websites and central reservation services). The savings more than paid for the phone calls we made from the US.

The Sofitel staff was quiet, efficient and professional. We requested a removal of the mini bar items and they agreed to waive the standard $30 fee for mini bar removal. We only had to request extra towels once, they kept us furnished with plenty of towels throughout our stay. The $4/day safe charge was a bit tacky, especially for a hotel with a casino, but in the big picture, was minor.

While a number of staff had recently been hired, they were pleasant, cooperative and didn't hesitate to ask someone more seasoned when they could not give us an answer (ie, moderately priced steakhouse recommendation). When my wife had a medical issue, they were helpful in furnishing the name of a physician within walking distance who saw her later that same morning.

We took two day trips, one to the Great Barrier Reef (middle reef) and one to Daintree rain forest. Although you can make trip arrangements the day before and let the weather report guide you, some of the smaller trips do fill up. Both should not be missed. While we enjoy trips with excellent commentary by the driver or ship captain and staff, neither one that we took provided strong education or narratives. We would suggest taking the Reef Teach 2 hour course given each evening prior to your snorkel or dive, which is offered a few blocks from the hotel. We took that course after our reef trip.

During the summer, the heat in the town can be stifling. It was 34C and humid during our trip, in the spring.

We would certainly recommend this hotel to our friends and family.

Hope this is helpful.

Stayed here for two nights at the start of our holiday. Really appreicated the exceptional service and the great location which was near the action but not in the middle of it. Being able to walk to the restaurants, casino and shops was great, however being able to not hear it all late at night is also a bonus. Our room faced the harbour and rivermouth and we felt very relaxed and comfortable. As we got in late on our first night we had room service which was very good and quickly delivered.
