“Good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

The location is excellent! A couple hundred yards from the dive docks and a couple of blocks from the Esplanade and restaurants and bars. The hotel is pretty good. The best thing we liked about it was the pool and the balcony. Our balcony had water views so it was nice to hang out there. The biggest gripe we had was the cheap plastic chairs on the balcony and lack of a small table. If you're going to have chairs, how about adding a $10 plastic table. It would be nice to have a place to set your drinks. The room did have a fridge which was nice.

Room Tip: Choose a room that faces the Casino which gives a good water view of the docks.

I am a regular traveller and heve been visiting Cairns for 35 years and satayed here four or five times so I look forward to the peace and tranquility of a well run hotel in a great location with spendid views and service.
This hotel offers great value with securuity, great aircon, and quiet accommodation in large spacious rooms with balconies and wonderfull large comfortable beds in a central location with a great outlook. There are in room facilities to make tea and coffe, well stocked mini bars and room to breath and relax with a comfortable seating area and a decent roomy if basic bathroom. The reasonablely sized Hotel has loads of quiet spaces to hide away and relax or work with a delightful reasonably large open air rooftop pool for cooling off or relaxing, if not large enough for Olympic training routines, but that also means it is also a quiet place to sunbathe, chill out and read a book.
You either like this kind of Hotel or you don't but as a seasoned traveller I look for something with character and dislike almost all big hotel groups and their standardised design and offering no matter how mant stars they rate. The nice thing about a genuine independent family owned hotel like the Pacific International is that it offers a boutique experience and has accountable long serving staff so you are rembered by friendly faces you can recognise. Even if you only come on a one time only vacation to explore the The Great barrier Reef or the Rain Forest, Uplands, world Class fishing and beaches of the area you get that sense of old time Cairns hospitality and character in the Premier modern hotel built there which encapsulated and retains some of the unique history of this pioneering town and its great adventurous spirit.
As always I loved my stay and cannot wait to return.

This hotel was booked for us by Swain Travels as part of our package. 4 of us (2 couples) checked into this hotel 15th April for 3 nights. The reception at the front desk was terrible. The gentleman could not care for us. He had a very cavalier attitude about checking us in. There were no help with luggage etc. Zero.

We were in the executive rooms on the top floor. Our rooms were located in front of the elevator, whose motor kept us awake for long periods at night.

The bath room was a joke. It is designed for "pigmies". Terrible showers. If this was the executive room, I can only imagine what the regular rooms would look like. No one cared when we complained.

This is a high traffic area of Cairns, as the hotel is within walking distance to the pier and the waterfront. It has nothing else. Oh! by the way the WiFI access costs a lot, only in lobby, and very slow and unreliable.

We will complain to Swain Travels so that they may direct their customers to a hotel where there is better service, and avoid this hotel.

The photo for this hotel is taken from across the street from a park. There are no trees on this property!

Room Tip: Avoid any room by the elevators, especially on the top floor.

I know renovations have to be done but do they have to be done at 7am every morning? The place does need a serious makeover but surely the guests comfort would come first? Some other examples. No one wants to help with your bags. When your struggling with three of them they just look at you. Any chance of a hand? Nope. The guy just walked the other way. Can we get the movies running in my room. Nope. Sorry not working in this room and nothing we can do. No gym. Not much of anything really but at least the location was good. Crappy hard beds to. They won't see me back again that's for sure. Very very average.

We stayed here from the 3rd to the 7th of April. A few minor problems, but nothing serious. TV remote would change channels but you couldn't increase the volume, so did not figure it was a battery problem. As other people have mentioned the raised step into the bathroon was a "toe stubber" is you forgot!! It was hit and miss with the male front desk staff. Sometimes you felt like you were being ignored, even with two staff in the area. The room was clean, the bathroon was sparkeling, no problem with the AC. Yes it was a bit awkard to make tea or coffee. We loved the breakfast hostess, she was very sweet! Made us feel very welcome. Only negative thing I have to say about this hotel is the front steps. We were two ladies with 3 bags each and had to lug them up these steps by ourselves. There was no bell boy although there was a stand there that looked like once upon a time they had one. There is no "ramp". I do not know how wheelchair people stay in this hotel! I hope that when they remodel the lobby area (which is nice now) they look at putting in a ramp so guests can wheel their luggage in to the lobby easily.

My wife and I stayed here in a room on the Tenth Floor, end unit, which has an almost 180 degree view of Fogarty Park, the waterfront and out to sea from both the room and the balcony through three large windows. We had no problems with any equipment or facilities. Bed was quite comfy as well. We only dined in the restaurant once; a dinner meal that was quite tasty but also very pricey against USA standards. Rather than pop for the A$35 breakfast, I walked two blocks to the McDonalds and enjoyed the McMuffin for only A$7. The hotel is centrally located. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

We ended up in two rooms during our three stay here. Our first nite room was terrible. The room was dated, the TV and in room safe did not work. To flush the toilet, we had to keep our finger on this button on the wall. Our bed was two sheets and no blankets (perhaps they anticipated the AC to go out in the evening). The bathroom had three warning signs one of which said in effect, take a shower with the door closed because the steam may set the fire alarm and the fine by the fire department for a false alarm is $1000.

On the plus side:

After calling our agent, we soon received a call from the manager who apologized and provided another room still dated but clean and everything worked properly which was apprecaited.

The staff are very good and responsive when we called for the problem with TV, safe and AC. The location is also very good.

Would I stay there agin? How does one know what room one is going to get?
