“Guilt-free shopping”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

The cheap-and-guilt-free-if-I-over-indulged tropical fruits can be found in most of the stalls. Feel free to try on anything as the sellers are very friendly here. I've bought two BIG honey melons for only $6 AUD, 3 mango for only $8, the sellers even helped me to take the fruit skin off, cut to pieces and put in the containers with no surcharges, so that I can take them to the beach.. very impressed!

Check out this DAY market if you have time to kill on Fri to Sun. It's just a short work from the esplanade

“Nice market”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

This is a great place to buy some tropical fruits at good prices.
There are cheap mangos, paw paws, lychees, water melons.
The market only opens a few days, generally at weekends and is located in the city.

“Too much of the same thing with many long travelled imports”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

As a visitor you might be impressed by the endless row of fruits and veggies. As a local though, you notice that 90% of the stands are selling exactly the same thing. They are run by families who only care about making a bit of money, not about truely supporting local farmers. Much of the fruit and veg they sell is imported to Cairns from Brisbane, or sometimes even further than that. Sometimes it's even imported from China where it is then packed in NZ to be shipped up here in Cairns. Much of these imports are heavily sprayed as an lacking in nutrients.

Some people even pretend to be farmers when they actually aren't. You'll also notice that many of these families selling produce don't know much of anything about what they are selling, and sometimes aren't even sure where it comes from. They also make little effort to create a friendly, laid back atmosphere, like what you would find at a good market like Yungaburra.

“Good variety & fresh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

Coming from Melbourne, we found it hard to find fresh Asian produce. Rusty's has most of what you can't find anywhere else in the region.

We even found some sawtooth coriander!
