Owner description: Seastar Cruises premium reef cruise combines the outer Great Barrier Reef with a coral cay island. In only 1 1/4 hours the fast air-conditioned Seastar 1 can take you from Cairns to magnificent Michaelmas Cay, the largest of the local uninhabited coral cays. Cruising past Green Island, Upolu cay and Oyster reef Seastar is the first boat to arrive. After an enjoyable time here it is a short 20 minute cruise to the splendid Hastings Reef sitting on the very outer edge. This is where the corals thrive, well out from the coast away from the influence the rivers and streams, adjacent to the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. You will have 2 1/2 hours at each location. Plenty of time to go snorkeling, do a introductory dive, relax on the beach of the Island or join a tour in the Glass Bottom Boat at Hastings Reef. The day cruise on Seastar inlcudes Morning/Afternoon tea, high quality snorkel equipment, Wetsuit or Lycra suit (depending on the time of year), Glass Bottom Boat Tour, Hot & Cold Buffet Lunch, Reef Interpretation & Guided Snorkel Tours on each spot.

“Wonderful tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Seastar cruises have it all figured out. Well organized, great staff, and great service. We were contemplating going with a different tour operator based solely on price but going in a small group was the way to go. Doing the initial snorkel tours with the crew felt almost crowded, so I can only imagine how it would have felt in a much larger group. In a small group there is so much more room to spread out once you're exploring on your own, and I feel that is the way to go. I would not hesitate going with Seastar again.

“Definately worth the time & money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013 via mobile

Highly recommend Seastar for a reef snorkel/scuba! I've been on 4 other snorkel trips & this one is the best company to date! Friendly staff puts you at ease, small numbers on the boat give you open water to snorkel, tasty lunch items, and a short 1.25 hours to first destination is incredible!

My trip had a girl stung by a poisionous jelly and the crew was very efficient with her care and getting her back to medical aid. Not a reason to plan for, but nice to know they can handle an emergency!

“Professional, Customer Focused and Safety Orientated”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

We booked this trip as we wanted a more personal experience and not some cattle class trip in one of them huge catamarans that pack in 300 people at one go.
So booked with Seastar as they are a family company and only take out 35 people at a time.
The other people on board were a mixture of ages from 20 to 50+.
What I liked was the crew were always attentive and speaking to everybody and always busy, cleaning gear, making food, drinks or just being friendly.
Now when we were at reef the weather was a big rough but as they had went through the safety brief we were all kitted out with stinger suits, prescription googles if needed, bouancy aids and noodles all free of charge.
Plus they also had a couple of rubber rings which they allowed people to hold onto and the guide took them around the reef.
This was a nice touch as at one time they had 8 people holding onto ring, so they had 3 guides in water with 3 rings and also another on top of boat keeping an eye on the snorkellers.
So they were very safety orientated and also very customer focused so that anybody that felt a bit scared they would take out on a personnel trip.
This was much appreciated.
I know that this is one company that knows and understands what customer service and satisfaction stands for.

Nearly forgot they have a lovely asian girl who is a dive instructor and speaks about 10 languages.

Do not pass this company over you will not be dissapointed.

“Good day...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

The staff were great, friendly and approachable.
It was a good day, a pity about the weather - a bit choppy out on sea. A lot of people seemed to be sea sick (not myself).
Disappointed about a few things with this cruise, and these were actually the selling point for us, which didn't happen in the end - on their website and written printed out information we had about the cruise it stated that 'underwater cameras were for hire', when asked to purchase one while docking, they said they didn't have any, however the crew would take photos and upload these on their Facebook page. After the day, had a look - not one photo of myself or my partner and only several of underwater photo shots of the reef, fish, etc (on the day).
Where we could, we took a few with our own, however this was when we were on the boat eating lunch and heading back to cairns (where we could in between falling over and rocking about the whole way). We cherish every moment we share and holiday we take and would have loved more photos for our memories and to show our friends and families (as the crew say 'word of mouth advertising...'). So 1. no underwater camera for hire.
The second selling point was that it was max 35 people on a good size boat... for the amount of people on the boat, we JUST fit. was hard to walk around without knocking into someone every time. I've been on A LOT of cruises (worldwide) - snorkelling, diving, and just standard 'cruising' (over nights and day cruises), and the amount of people on the boat was too many for the size of the boat - could have been 20-25 people tops!
Third thing - we booked for diving, which we didn't end up doing. I've done several dives before (overseas), and this one felt rushed to put on the gear and get us out - which I understand, wanting their customers to get the most of it, which is great! However I would have liked to snorkel first to get used to the breathing part again, and then do my dive. My partner, who has never dived before needed more time to get used to this also - first time diver, still trying to get the hang of everything and remember what to do, etc... especially when its really windy and under pressure trying to get under the water as others are also diving, you don't want to hold them up.
Although we were offered to do diving at the second site, it was after lunch and we were getting tired from the first part of the day - and the snorkelling at this site was enough to see everything.
Lunch was nice, small buffet - however you need to be cautious of your portions due to everyone else on the boat, and once all has something if there's anything left you can get seconds. There's a lot of potatoe and pasta dishes and then salad. I know some of the larger/built men (my partner included), it wasn't enough - knowing this, I always bring extras! fruit and muesli bars - keep this in mind for all guys out there.
All in all, was a good day - however those few things would have made it a fantastic day! also a tip - pick a very calm day, will make it a lot better for the snorkel/dive...

“Highlight of Aussie vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

Our Great Barrier Reef snorkel day trip was the highlight of our week vacation to Australia. The crew, staff, and experience far exceeded our expectations. If you have any hold backs because of the pricing, do not!! This trip is well worth the costs and we have no complaints on our experience. The reef is the most amazing thing we have seen.....it was like being in the movie "Finding Nemo" as everything was so beautiful it seemed fake. Couldn't believe we were seeing it with our own eyes. The length of the trip was perfect, the crew was friendly, engaging, and educational. We always felt safe and watched over, lunch was delicious, and the pictures the crew took are great memories to have. We really cannot say enough good things about Seastar Cruises and our amazing experience. Will for sure be a return customer on any future trips to Cairns! Thanks Seastar!
