“Not the nicest in Cairns!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

Me and my friend had booked here for 3 nights and only stayed for the one night! It certainly isn't the nicest place to stay within Cairns. The hostel is not central (which normally doesn't matter if the accomadation is nice enough) although the rooms were unclean, dark and smelly. The bathroom looked as though it had not been cleaned properly for some time and the drains smelled strongly! We arrived into Cairns and after calling the hostel were told that the shuttle bus would come to collect us. We waited an hour for him to come for us! After a very long coach journey this wasn't a great start to our stay.

We only stayed here one night because it was so bad. We had booked a double room, and were given a dorm with two beds pushed together, and charged the full amount for a 'Deluxe En-suite with pool view and TV' (the only one available) and it didn't have a pool view or a tv, and there was nothing deluxe about it, the sheets had holes in.
The 'contintental breakfast' is a kettle, some mugs, bowls and a box of weet-bix. The 'dinner included' is some rice/pasta with a tin of tomatoes ontop. However, the worst part was the kitchen, which was absolutely FILTHY, with flies swarming everywhere as it clearly had not been cleaned, ever it seemed. It is also a good half an hour walk out of Cairns and, although you can be picked up from the bus, it took them over an hour to meet us. Horrible.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Let me start with the pros tge staff were very helpful. Thats about it. Got to our room (10 bed dorm) and the first thing was the smell, the room smelt like old socks. The beds had no protector covers on so they were stained and horrible! The walls were all marked and the whole room was just grubby. Then there was the bugs all through our stay there was bugs in the room and when I say bugs I mean cockroaches and friends. The window in the bathroom was broken so anything could fly in. Also the aircon was broken so the room was boiling.

The hostel offers free meals but to be fair they are more of a snack than a meal. We had pasta and tomato sauce, sausages and bread and rice and sauce. All in small bowls which were not even half full.
On the plus side the entertainment area was nice and drinks were a resonable price. There was a bit of a cliuqey atmosphere but there is in alot of hostels I guess. Overall stay here if your really skint but there are far nicer places in Cairns which are closer to the center too.

I arrived at Cairns Beach House and immediately had to be moved rooms because the lights didn't work in my first room. The rooms are very basic, which is fine for the price, but the level of security in the whole place is shocking! In fact, I didn't need to use a key once to get into my room and being on the ground floor, this was especially a concern of mine. The doors do not lock easily, the bathroom was disgusting and I felt pretty unsafe at night (especially as a fight broke out at the police turned up in my dorm at 6am!)

The 'free meal' was very basic, which on one hand you can expect for the price, but the kitchen was very dirty and I saw one of the staff with her feet on the counter top which was disgusting seeing as this is the surface the food was being prepared on.

The free shuttle bus was convenient, but the driver didn't actually know where he was going which was a concern for up those who needed to catch a bus/boat as they were instructing HIM where to go.

The free wifi didn't really work most of the time which was frustrating.

Yes, it is a cheap place to stay, but there are other places for the same price with a MUCH higher standard. Over all, very disappointed and I would NOT recommend

Bathrooms where digusting as were the rooms, need a mop every one in a while didnt seem to have any room cleaners to come around and check up on the conditions of rooms. The pool is nice and the FREE WIFI is a huge plus. Great knowledgable staff and free dinner, unfortunately that just doesn't make up for everything else.

Room Tip: Book a solo room or another hostel.

Stayed in this hostel one week. Was hoping to stay for at least a month, but it's not a good hostel for people wanting to settle for that length of time! Firstly the pool area is nice and the bar area also, but the actual hostel facilities like the rooms and kitchen are not good. I stayed in an 10bed dorm which was fine. Clean and plenty of room for stuff (maybe only though because the room wasn't full!) however no lockers and only one bathroom to share with one toilet and one awful shower in it. Also people could see into the shower from outside. the kitchen we avoided altogether once we found out you had to constantly ask for any equipment, bowls, plates or cutlery you needed, and leave your key at reception untill you returned them each time you used them. the kitchen was filthy and the taps did not work. You had to wash your dishes under a drip. A big improvement in the kitchen and better bathroom facilities and this hostel would be great!!
