Travelled with Wife and two children (10/7). I've been on several previous trips to the barrier reef out of Cairns and Port Douglas. This trip was on a par with Quicksilver from many years ago. The boat was comfortable and ploughed through the rough sea well as it was very windy and choppy on the way to the pontoon. We paid extra on the trip out to do a group snorkel adventure with a marine biologist for about 1hr. This was the highlight of our trip and we got to snorkel in different areas than the normal roped off part and saw much more and learnt much more. It was an additional $160 for the four of us but well worthwhile. It did make the entire day cost about $650 but the overheads to run an operation like this must be phenomenal and I know that just running a small boat costs a small fortune.
The lunch provided was very good and there was free tea, coffee and water while not underway. The bar was also very reasonable with beers, spirit mixers and wine cheaper than most hotels so they definitely do not try to rip off the captured audience.
Oh and most importantly the area of reef we went to was very good with heaps of variety to see and clear water. The snorkelling equipment was good.
