“Good spot to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2009

Stayed 3 nights at this B&B which is located within about 10-15min walk of north bank and in a very quiet area; a nice place to stay. Spring Hill area apparently used to be quite rough but we felt safe there. Room we had was clean, well dressed and comfortable. Breakfast was a good continental self-service al fresco in a very pretty little patio garden area. Everyone was very helpful and this made for a very pleasant stay.

TH is a small B&B (3 or 4 rooms), the rooms are very well decorated (stylle & fresh flowers) and of sufficient space. We arrived very early that day after a 24h flight. Although not definitive promised, we were welcomed with a small breakfast and a cup of tea. Our room was ready very quick then. Everything was done to feel at home.
The B&B has a central yet very qiet surrounding.
Our exspectations werer fulfilled in every regard - Thank you.

We needed a place to stay on our 1 night stopover in Brisbane, we picked the Thornbury out from a google search. We were lucky enough to get a room. Transport using the shuttle bus from the airport right to the front door was great and so easy and inexpensive. Our flight was arriving late in the evening and Kaye provided us with info on where we could find something to eat within walking distance of the property. The property is an old workers cottage right in the centre of Brisbane, which the owners have modernised whilst leaving the integrity of the history of the building to enjoy and appreciate. The location is great which enables seeing Brisbane really easy. Our room was very well appointed and very tastefully decorated, as is the rest of the guest areas. Kaye was really helpful and friendly making us feel really welcome and wishing we were able to spend more time in Brisbane. We had a lovely breakfast on the covered terrace, fresh fruit, cereals, a wide variety of breads and conserves, selection of teas and coffees and juices.

As we only had 3 hours to experience the city, Kaye gave us lots of advice on what not to do and offered to store our bags whilst we were out, which was an absolute godsend given it was so hot.

I would definitely recommended the Thornbury and when we go back to Brisbane for a longer visit we hope to be able to stay there again.

We stayed at Thornbury House for 3 days in October 2008.

it was a pleasure to meet the charming host Kay (who has a great sense of humour) and Oscar the cat.

Our room was very comfortable, elegantly appointed, and refreshed each day.

We enjoyed a healthy fruit breakfast at a civilised hour each morning in the downstairs garden room, along with an unlimited supply of good coffee.

Thornbury House is quiet. There is about a 10 minute walk to the Brisbane City bus to the central retail district. (or about 20-25 minutes if you walk the whole way)

On our departure day Kay kindly stored our bags so that we could spend the day in Brisbane. She also booked a shuttle bus, which arrived at the front door at the appointed time to whisk us efficiently to the airport.

All in all a great stay and highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed at the Thornbury for 3 nights in April, and we were very happy with our stay. The Thornbury is a small bed and breakfast in the Spring Hill neighborhood of Brisbane (close to Chinatown), which is a nice location to explore the city from.

We arrived late in the evening and were surprised to be personally welcomed by our friendly host, Richard. He quickly had us settled in and gave us a few restaurant recommendations for a late dinner. He also chatted with us each morning while we enjoyed our breakfast of yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereal, toast, muffins, fresh juice and coffee in the courtyard.

Our room was nicely appointed in a modern style with a queen size bed, flat screen tv and mini-fridge, and the bathroom had a spacious shower stall, large sink and toilet. Both the bedroom and the bathroom were very clean on our arrival and were kept that way by the housekeeper every day. The room was on the small side, but it was perfectly adequate for the two of us.

We had a late night flight to Singapore at the end of our trip, and Richard kept our bags after we had checked out, and he was kind enough to help us arrange a taxi late in the evening.

Richard is a wonderful host and and made us feel very welcome during our stay. He gave us some great recommendations on what to do and places to eat around town as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Thornbury, and I would happily recommend it to others.

What a difference to our previous stay, Richard's business partner Kate was the host and I use that term very loosely , warder would be closer to the mark. Instead of the normal greetings and offers of afternoon tea that B&B's normally offer (and we got last time), we were told to make tea in our room and take to the courtyard ourselves as she packs it all away after breakfast. One stays at a B&B because of the homely nature of the venue, the friendly interactions.
After looking through the breakfast offering several times I asked "No fresh fruit this morning?" I got snapped at me "well if you just wait a minute" without another word from me, on her return from the kitchen I got "I can only do one thing at a time you know". Not a nice start to the day. The jams and yoghurt were already on the table when we arrived in the courtyard, uncovered and visited by flies. Given Queensland's climate I don't think yoghurt should be left on the table before people arrive. I strongly advise you not to stay unless Richard is the host, he is delightful and hospitable.

This B & B has to be experienced to be believed. The outside is not that imposing but the room that we had was fantastic. It was obviously recently modernised as the owners confirmed to us. The bathroom had a fresh display of beautiful flowers. The whole B & B had been renovated with style and panache and was something that could have been featured in an up market homes magazine. Breakfast, which was excellent was served in a lovely courtyard. The guesthouse was situated close to the centre of Brisbane and within walking distance of the CBD and Chinatown. Altogether a tremendous experience.
