You might not think of Brisbane as a cultural destination but the huge complex of centres on the South Bank should do enough on their own to dispel this myth. The Performing Arts Centre, Museum, Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art cover a huge footprint and contain a huge cache of treasures. And although built in the Brutalist style beloved of local authorities, there are some stylish design touches to the buildings themselves.
We took on the QAG and spent more than haf a day there. It has an impressive standing collection and, on our visit, was hosting a Dürer exhibition. The gallery layout is particularly easy to navigate and lends itself to walking around on a whim. And there is an absolutely spectacular treat in store as you walk into the main foyer (I won't spoil it).
