“Good location and friendly staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in basic double room. We found it to be in a good location with friendly staff. It is not luxurious but it is a lot quieter than staying in Fortitude Valley. The minibus running to Roma Street via the State Library every hour is handy. You are in easy walking distance to Queen Street Mall.

Stayed here for a couple of nights and had no problems at all, the staff are really friendly, the locks on the doors actually work and there is a free shuttle bus every hour that takes you into town so of you don't feel like walking then its great! Location was good though, only a 15 minutes walk from south bank which has heaps of bars and restaurants. Probably the best place to hang out in the city. The hostel has a bit of a party feel but they shut down all the noise at ten and people head into west end which is literally a five minute walk so of you want to avoid that then its really easy. They also have space for you to park your van if you're in a camper which is useful!

I booked this hotel as I thought the previous 2 I booked in Australia did not give me a real feel of the back packing experience ( I was more like flash packing with suitcases)
The hotel had all types of people and all friendly and getting along with each other. The communal areas where always bustling and everyone respected each others food in the communal fridges.
This was not a posh hotel by any means but it was a great hotel to visit and my 3 days there I really enjoyed

Nice place to stay but huge, so a lot of people. The people that live there long term are very load and start drinking quite early and don't really stop. They also do this right outside all the bedrooms, so if your a light sleeper or want somewhere to relax its not a great place to do it. The staff are friendly and helpful and the place it pretty tidy. There is a shuttle bus in and out every hour which is good.

I have been there for a couple of weeks and it's absolutely lovely! You can really feel home, good price, useful free bus service to the city, comfortable living room, cute cats and friendly and helpful staff. I could actually live there :)

Arrive for an overnight stay here on route through Queensland.
We were offered 2 beds in 2 separate rooms, not problem there,
but the one room sleeping 8, were so damp and smelly I was glad to pay $15 to sleep in my car in the parking lot, instead of paying $25 for the shared room.

Staff are so unhelpful, that when we came to collect something forgotten there, I had to search the entire place only to find the item right behind the receptionist which is where I asked him to look in the first place.

Place is dirty and dodgy.
Dont bother.

Happy camping.

Room Tip: The 6 bed dorms with ensuites are better than the 8 room dorms. Look for something with windows as...

Stayed there on a temporary basis as I was looking for accommodation in Brisbane. I thought it would be a cheap solution compared to a hotel. All things considered, it wasn't that cheap. Because though the bed in the dorm costs little, you have to pay for all other things like food and the internet (a must these days). Now, for internet the hostel charges $40 for one week, with that sort of money one could probably get an internet plan for one whole month.

The reception staff were overall very friendly and helpful, especially one of the girls (she's Aussie I think). Their free shuttle service, which goes to South Bank, was often useful. Another positive is that you can have a fridge in your own room if you take the option when booking.

In my case though, the place wasn't appropriate to stay (more my fault than the hostel's - I should have done my research work better). I often needed to go to Brisbane's Central Business District and to do this from the hostel you either have to walk for 30 minutes (quite tiring, even for someone like me who walks a lot) or take a bus, which ends up costing a lot (transport in Australia can be quite expensive). And to go back to the hostel... there's no bus stop nearby, you will have to climb a road that goes uphill to get back and it can be daunting. And the best parts of West End and South Bank, where you can find restaurants and stores, aren't that close to the hostel as it may look on a map. Again I repeat, I do not blame the hostel for this, I should have done my research better. But I think this sort of information can be useful to potential guests and need to point it out.

Now where it gets really annoying is the kind of people that stay there. I know the hostel cannot possibly control that but travellers need to be warned - if you stay there you will come across plenty of Europeans on a "work holiday" visa. Most of them are actually having fun until they will have used up all their savings - only when they need money will they begin looking for work. Among them you'll have plenty of unfriendly, arrogant French (I've actually lived in France and have plenty of friends there, and was shocked by the lousy attitude of the French guests at the hostel). Another group you're likely to encounter are promiscuous Britons, and if there are Brits staying in the same dorm as you, don't be surprised to hear them having sex in the middle of the night. (Yes, it happened, and one of the guests whom this most annoyed was a fellow Brit). That sort of thing doesn't disturb me but I reckon it can be for other people.

I've read other reviews questioning the cleanliness of the place - the lack of cleanliness is mostly down to the disorderly guests than to lack of effort from the hostel staff. Also they've got the noise and parties under close control, I slept well most of the time and was never bothered by noise.

In spite of my rating and negative review, I actually think that Somewhere to Stay can be a practical solution depending on one's needs, for example for someone who is keen on being close to the West End. But before booking in, you should know well what kind of place it is and what kind of experience is awaiting you there.
