A fantastic day out visiting Queenslands island Penal Colony. The tour starts with a sedate 30 minute cruise to the island on a catamaran aptly named the " Cat o Nine Tails". From the start, the crew are friendly and the commentary and introduction on the boat, was entertaining.
The tour itself, is done by actors dressed in clothing similar to what was issued at the time and presented in a knowledgeable and sometimes funny way. There are still quite a number of building structures to look at that give you an idea of the sad and cramped way of life for people that may have been convicted of nothing more than swearing in public.
This tour does involve walking, around 4 k's of it and mainly over grass and tracks as you make your way around various points of interest. We found it easy but for the elderly or those with any mobility issues, it would be a hard day. Those with small children may find it hard to keep the little ones engaged in the story as there is a lot of walking and waiting. There were some with prams that found the going tough.
The catamaran serves hot drinks, soft drinks and you can purchase alcohol on board if you wish. The lunch consisted of a salad, a couple of small pieces of cold meat, a bread roll and some butter. This came in a foil lined basket with a knife and fork. If you feel that it may not be enough food, bring some with you as there are no shops to purchase anything else. There was as much tea, coffee, soft drink and water as you wanted. You can also pre purchase alcohol on the boat that will be delivered to you with your lunch if you wished. They provide chairs and blankets that you can move to where you wish under the beautiful shady trees. The views are lovely looking out over Moreton Bay. They also run a night tour that would give a different feel to the story. Make sure you take some water, sunscreen and insect repellent. The horse flys are very friendly.
A great day out for anyone wanting to do something completely different, we loved it.
