“Quite disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

Not the best value in Brisbane. The hotel has been recently refurbished to produce a look that is quaint (lots of walnut) but also institutional (corridors look like hospitals and there are some battleship grey walls). We found reception variable: the night we checked in the person on the desk was hostile and brusque rather than friendly, though other staff seemed better. Walls between rooms are too thin to filter out the noise of rolling wardrobe doors, and with a wedding in the hotel one night we stayed, there was little chance of sleep even though the guests were not abnormally noisy. There was a decent selection of tea bags to go with the kettle, but no other freebies. Beds were OK, but pillows rather unyielding, so my wife woke with a stiff neck each morning. Cleanliness average. Main feature in favour of the hotel is its location, and - by Australian standards - its relatively modest prices.

Room Tip: No benefit in taking a park-side room, since the noise problems are internal to the hotel.

Dear Guest

Thank you for staying with us and for sharing your feedback.

I was disappointed to read your comments regarding our service upon your check in – as you can see from our other reviews, our Front Desk team are usually very welcoming and it concerns me that you did not experience the same levels of service as you expected. I would greatly value the opportunity to discuss this with you further if you are so inclined.

Our ongoing refurbishment continues with new ground floor carpeting, front desk and all our suites will be completely transformed in January 2012 – we are also hoping to have our room corridors painted and carpeted in 2012 as well. With regards to your comments about the noise from other rooms, we are also obtaining options for full soundproofing of the entire building and I would be more than happy to keep you updated with developments in this area.

I was surprised to find that your pillows were uncomfortable as again, they have been a constant source of good feedback on other reviews – however we do recognise that choice of pillow is a very personal one, and as such there are two spare in every room as well as a pillow menu offering a selection of 8 different types of pillows in your in room compendium.

If you wish to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact myself directly – I can also note your pillow preferences so that we can ensure you receive a good night’s sleep every time.

Kind Regards
Nick

Recently my work mates and I were invited to come and review this hotel. Being a experince hotel stayer I knew what to look for. They gave us breakfast which was lovley and had a wide range of food.

The rooms are fantastic, more then what I expected. Modern, clean, well lit, good views over the park or city. large bathrooms. Service was good, the staff were really friendly

Room Tip: Choose a higher level floor for the view Order the buffet breakfast

Dear Guest

Thank you for your kind words. I will be sure to share your comments with our team as everyone here works so hard to provide the best service in Brisbane.

May I suggest for your next stay booking a Royal Room. Situated on the top floors of the hotel overlooking the park, our Royal Rooms feature upgraded pillowtop mattresses, bottled water, full buffet breakfast and either internet & pressing or an in-house movie – sounds perfectly designed to fit in with your room tips!

Thank you once again and we look forward to welcoming you next time

Nick

This is a great hotel in a convenient location. I only have one grief. Would it kill them to set up the TV/Foxtel to fit the screen properly? Can't read banners, stocks, exchange rates.......... aaagh!

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to share your review with us and other likeminded travellers.

I would be keen to learn your room number so that we may adjust the Television in that room to ensure the aspect ratio is correct to specifications. We sometimes find that guests whom plug in personal devices do change the settings on the hotel televisions and this may affect the display for future guests.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience to you for this.

Nick

The hotel is nicely located in Brisbanes central business district. The rooms are old but well maintained and large. Shower unfortunately is in the bathtub with one of those ugly shower curtains, but towels and bathroom are clean.

My rate included breakfast and I know that the hotel charges a substantial amount for breakfast, if it is not included. The breakfast is ok. I only take two slices of toast anyway and that is provided. The coffee is a nightmare. The tea is harder to spoil, but still ugly. So it is almost impossible to have a nice start into the day.

The staff is rather laid back and inattentive.

All in all, I would be quite happy. After all it is only a 4 star hotel, but the prices are outrageous for what is being provided.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.

I’m pleased to see that you find our rooms are good size – a trait that is so hard to find in newer hotels. With regards to the shower curtains, we do have a rolling program to replace the shower curtains to a glass shower screen and on your next stay, please advise our front desk so that we can ensure you receive one.

With regards to your comments about breakfast, may I suggest on your next stay if you were to book a room only rate, and see our Breakfast supervisor, we would usually make a concession for someone whom only wanted a light breakfast option of only toast and tea / coffee therefore this may be a more cost effective option for you – rather than purchasing a room including a full buffet breakfast with choice of 10+ hot dishes.

We also offer a number of options for your morning coffee as we realize that it a vital ingredient to start the day with. Filtered coffee is included with the full buffet breakfast, however a full selection of espressos and specialty teas are also available. We also have some rooms that feature Nespresso machines so maybe this is also an option that may interest you.

I do apologise profusely if you found our team inattentive – they certainly strive for excellence and rarely miss their mark so I must apologise to you if they did not exceed your expectations.

Finally the only other advice I may offer with regards to securing a better price from your room is that Brisbane accommodation mid week is in short supply, so if your flexible with dates we do offer some excellent specials – also the further forward you are able to book your accommodation will also obtain you a higher discount off our mid week rates. Of course this advice is general and doesn’t take into account your specifications.

If you wish to discuss any of these items further, please do not hesitate to contact myself direct

Kind Regards

Nick

Stayed with 2 young kids. Convenient location near a huge mall, park, car rental companies, food and a small Asian supermart.

Driving was also convenient as is located near major roads and highways. Rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. Bathroom has a less-than-modern design with plain white tiles but is clean and working.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Didn't make full use of facilities (gym, swimming pool) but very glad there was a coin-operated laundry room (washer, dryer and powder dispenser).

Dear Guest.

Thank you for providing your options to us and other likeminded travellers.

We are pleased to see that our facilities suited your stay and that our team members were friendly and helpful – they really are the core of our business and I will enjoy sharing your comments with them as a sign of a job well done!

It’s interesting that you mention our proximity to the Riverside Expressway – most guests are so dazzled by our location close to the Gardens, CBD and shopping that they forget that we do have direct access to the Gold and Sunshine Coast freeways from the end of our street.

Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you in the future

Kind Regards

Stayed three nights for business and was impressed by the standard and particularly by the friendly and helpful staff. Hotel facilities are good and location beside the Botanic Gardens is perfect for exploring. The room was spacious and spotless and the bed was enormous and very comfortable. Slight downsides were a comparatively small and dated bathroom and some noise from street-cleaning and roadworks but nothing major. Would definitely return next time I'm in Brisbane.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with other travellers.

We are pleased to read that you enjoyed your newly refurbished room. With regards to your comments about street noise, although as you have recognized, the street noise is minimal, we are currently investigating options of having our building fully sound proofed. We are also investigating further enhancement options for all our guest room bathrooms and expect more details to be released on these early in 2012.

Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you in the future

We've stayed at Royal On The Park a few times now, most recently in July and August with special deals. Stayed in garden view rooms, and enjoyed the extras that came with our deals (free breakfast, or a discount voucher which we used at brekkie; movie tickets; late checkout). The rooms are comfy and spacious, and the breakfasts are enjoyable (lots of choice, and good quality, and they make a nice espresso if you order one). The location is brilliant for a Brisbane CBD stay.
On one occasion we walked down to Eagle St Pier and had dinner at the Bavarian Beer Cafe, and on the other we walked to Moo Moo Bar and Grill (that was for my husband's birthday dinner). Both were fabulous, but the next time we stay at Royal On The Park, we might just try their in-house restaurant!

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to provide your comments to us.

Im pleased to see that you were able to utilises some of our special deals and inclusive packages – these have been becoming more and more popular recently – most likely attributed to the great all inclusive packages and the value they provide.

I do have to say that I’m surprised that you are yet to try our famous Walnut Restaurant & Lounge Bar - Yes our location is central to so many fine restaurants and entertainment spots, but you really must experience Chef Rhian’s new menu. Since its implementation, the Walnut Restaurant has risen to #2 on TripAdvisor with a 95% recommended rating – you really must come and see what all the fuss is about (but don’t forget to ensure our team makes a reservation for you!)

Kind Regards

Nick
