"Don't judge a book by its cover" would probably be an appropriate lesson for the staff at this Marriott to learn.
I stay in hotels all over the world, and I seek out GOOD ones. I generally enjoy staying at Marriott hotels because of the excellent service and quality. This Marriott is an exception to the "Marriott Standard". From the get-go, the Service was horrendous.
Firstly, we arrived at the Valet parking to have the valet stare down his nose at us, leaving both my and my traveling partner to ask: "Is our (rental) car not good enough for this guy?" What Degree does he have to park my car? We were dressed-down, in jeans and casual clothes, and we had a toddler with us. Nevermind...
The check-in was NO better. We stayed on a Marriott REWARDS stay, a profile which is shared. However, the check-in staff asked if the other person on the rewards profile was "busy" so he could verify if it was OK for us to stay, because "you're not on the profile" (which we are). When he checked of course, we were there. WHY couldn't the check-in staff simply look at this info BEFORE quizzing us on our qualifications to stay there? Ridiculous.
However, none of this is my major complaint. My major complaint is about the restaurant downstairs where we adjourned for Afternoon Tea. We ordered the High Tea for one, as it was a late afternoon tea. Apart from one other set of diners, we were the ONLY people in the restaurant. Despite this, our "high tea" took 45 minutes to arrive, and Staff were less than friendly. In addition, staff (not the chefs - who got the rap for this) standing towards the back of the restaurant were speaking to a visiting (not working) staff member and swearing quite colorfully. In any circumstance - but especially while a child is present - this is completely unacceptable.
After much complaint the GM offered us our afternoon tea complimentary, but the experience was ruined by the completely ridiculous wait and lack of service. +1 for Motion Restaurant: The High tea was excellent. Unfortunately the actual food was the ONLY positive for this restaurant.
I almost convinced our dressed-down attire and casual appearance was to blame for some of our poor service. Like I said, as someone who actively stays in Marriott hotels - and enjoys them enough to redeem stays in these establishments, it was HUGELY disappointing.
I'm afraid I have to agree with other travelers - who titled their reviews "Not a 5-star hotel" and "disappointing". I concur...
