My wife and two sons (9 & 13) all had a very enjoyable river tour today on the Mirimar. The cruise up the river and back again was totally relaxing. The running commentary provided on the way up was very interesting, informative and humorous. The boat was very roomy and stable in the water.
We enjoyed the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and found that we had plenty of time there to see everything. We saw the Koala Presentation, had our photos taken holding the Koalas, we also saw the magnificent Birds of Prey Flight Show and the boys & I absolutely loved the Sheepdog & Shearing Show. We also had plenty of time to see the talking cockatoos, reptiles, dingos, Tasmanian devils and the platypuses.
Its probably best to hold off eating lunch while you are at the Koala Sanctuary and to use your time to make sure you see all the animals. There is plenty of time to eat & drink during the boat trip on the way back.
On the Minimar there is a bar with a good range of wine, beers & spirits. There is also soft drinks and juices available. The food available included freshly prepared sandwiches, burgers, scones & cakes. I enjoyed a nice cold XXXX beer with a real Aussie style burger on the way back. My wife tried some of the freshly made scones with jam and cream which were the best she had tasted in a long while. My wife thought they were so good she made comment about them to "Mark" behind the counter, who turns out to be a fully qualified Chef, he told us that his scones are made to a recipe that has been handed down through his family. I might also mention that the prices for food and drink on the Minimar seemed very reasonable.
The boats skipper "Rob" was great with my youngest son who was fairly inquisitive about the boat and how the controls all worked. Rob gave my son the run down on how the boats controls work and let him try on his captains hat. The crew were all very friendly, attentive and courteous.
I totally disagree with one previous reviewer that said that this was not the best way to see the Koala Sanctuary. As I said above we felt that we had ample time at the sanctuary to see everything. We were not fussed about missing out on seeing the platypus being fed, we had time to see them swimming in their tank and I don't think seeing them eat would have made much difference to our experience.
My family had a great day and were totally relaxed after the river cruise. For us we especially enjoyed not having to drive to the sanctuary.
What a great day out it was. I would recommend this trip to everyone.
