“Oasis near the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

We had the pleasure of spending three nights at Spicers and found it to be a home away from home with a lovely atmosphere. The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly at all times, the room small, but clean and comfortable. The inclusion of a full breakfast and canapes in the evening was a real bonus. The food was beautiful. Just a short walk and we were in the heart of Fortitude Valley or New Farm. A very peaceful place in a lovely area.

Room Tip: downstairs bedroom suffers a bit from kitchen noise would be my only complaint. Our room was small...

Dear PerthKerry

I am very pleased you enjoyed our “home”, the atmosphere the Queenslander and the team provided. I am delighted you noticed the peacefulness of the property as we love to promote the home away from home with relaxed luxury. It was nice to meet you and as we said, a small world and we might see you in Perth one day. Please come and say hi when you are in Brisbane again.

Warmest Regards

Willie Smuts & Team Balfour

We spent our wedding night here. The staff went out of their way to look after us both in the day prior to the wedding and after. They gave us an early check in so my wife could use the room to get dressed and relax with family.

Well hello Spicers Balfour - where have YOU been hiding?!

When my normal Brisbane CBD was booked out, I decided to take a punt on a boutique option and am I glad I did! The vibe is very much like staying in a friend's private holiday house with staff. The reason for this is:

1. Beautifully decorated & relaxed open areas to hang out/read/work/have a glass of wine. The staff quietly go about their work unobtrusively whilst occasionally checking if there's anything you need
2. The 'honesty system' - fully stocked bars and snack areas are waiting for you to help yourself, then pop your choice into the book to be added to your bill at check out. This heightens a sense of 'owning' the space you are staying in. Loved it!

Bouquets:
1. Decor is gorgeous! Classy but still comfortable.
2. Room - Bed was fantastic, good selection of pillows, pod coffee machine, reasonably priced snack options, bathroom was fresh and clean, luxury towels and linens
3. Service was impeccable! An associate met me at the hotel and the manager popped into the bar with a freshly squeezed juice to welcome her and offer his assistance in locating a great lunch venue - classy
4. Restaurant - dinner was lovely (mains around $35ish) and the included breakfast is insanely good value. A la carte breakky from a sophisticated menu and included all coffees & juices.
5. Location - if you want to skip the traditional CBD experience, this hotel is a ten minute walk from the seriously drool-worthy James St shopping precinct in Fortitude Valley.

Brickbats:
1. Lighting in the bathroom was not very make-up friendly
2. No fridge in room means fresh milk for tea/coffee must be used immediately or dumped
3. Next door is a residential address, so take care doing a nudie run from the bathroom without pre-closing drapes!

As you can see, not much to complain about. I'll be back here in a heartbeat.

Don't miss a nighttime apéritif in the roof top bar - the view of the Story Bridge and it's light show is gorgeous.

Dear Global2010

Hope Townsville is as sunny as Brisbane at the moment. Might be travelling to Townsville for a night soon, any suggestions on a good hotel?
So glad your CBD Hotel was booked out and you landed with us. I am delighted that you enjoyed our Décor, Rooms, Service, Restaurant and the location. It’s on the doorstep of the CBD but without the noise. Thank you so much for your feedback, my team really enjoyed all your comments. Our operations and design team is always looking into ways to ensure you have the best experience in Brisbane staying with us, I will pass your feedback regarding the fridge on to them and will look into this for you. We have been blessed to have won the best design boutique hotel globally and with saying that it sometimes poses difficulty to add or change anything in the property. To find a little fridge that fits with the room design might take some time but we will definitely look into it. I am looking forward to seeing you on your next visit to Spicers Balfour Hotel.

Warmest Regards

Everything about our stay was superb. Warm welcome, cozy accommodations, tasteful design, thoughtful amenities, handsome setting, informed and gracious staff, generous hospitality, refreshing roof deck, delicious breakfast. We are sooo glad to have stayed here and not in CBD. We would love to return!

My husband and I just enjoyed a wonderful night at Spicers Balfour, we wish we could have stayed longer! The whole booking process was seamless and when we arrived we were very excited to be told we had been upgraded to the Terrace Suite. Woohoo! Our room was lovely with a beautiful verandah. Canapés and drinks on the roof-top bat set the scene for a great night. Breakfast in the sun, served on our own balcony, was generous and definitely a worthy inclusion. Our king bed was cosy with divine linen and the room was quiet. The only quibble I have was that our pillows were too high. Staff were faultless, nothing was too much trouble. Definitely recommended.

Dear Purplescraps Family

We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and we thought you might enjoy the Terrace Suite as everybody deserves a little extra. You are not too far away from us so please come and say hi when you are in next, you are always welcome, even if it is just to come and read the morning newspaper with a cup of tea to get away from the busy city. I will work on those pillows and when you stay again please advise us and I will source different ones for you. Have a great week.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

We booked a four day stay in Brisbane at the Spicers Balfour not really knowing what to expect, having come all the way from Canada, but from the moment that we arrived, Mr. Smuts and the staff were amazing. Congenial and helpful, but never intrusive. Even though we had our infant daughter with us, it was still a romantic couple's interlude because of the atmosphere created there, intimate and private and yet always with attentive staff close by for whatever we needed. We had breakfast every morning on the veranda and dinner on two of the three nights we were there. We should have had dinner there every night. The food was fantastic, and the canapes on the rooftop with a glass of wine each was a perfect way to begin every evening. This is a gem, and although we enjoyed walking to the little shops in New Farm and taking the CityCat along the river to see the rest of Brisbane, including the koalas and kangaroos at Lone Pine Sanctuary, returning each day to our room at the Balfour was a highlight of our stay. Little touches like the fresh-squeezed juice in the morning and honour system for drinks from the rooftop bar when staff are someplace else helping someone out--all create a sense of luxury and informal belonging that reinforces the sense that you are not being watched over or nickel and dimed the way that even the best 5-star hotels make you feel when they track and overcharge you for every item in your minibar. This place isn't cheap, but we came away feeling that it was a great value because you get so much for what you pay, and indeed you are not thinking at all about what you are paying while you are there, which is more important than it seems in terms of value. We highly recommend this hotel, and would go again in an instant. Its a unique place because of the small number of rooms, and yet the chef is fantastic even given the small size and the service is personalized to the point that our 21 month old daughter quickly felt that she knew everyone there. A great place to stay--thanks to the staff and the thoughtful service and great food!

Loved the homely feel of the Balfour. Made to feel very welcome right from check-in. Had a courtyard room which was nice as we could open the door although the large wall to the courtyard did make the room dark. The rooms are equipped with every amenity you will need. The bathroom in our room was vey small but again provided everything. Great coffee making facilities. We would have liked a king size bed and did find out on check out that there are rooms with king beds so ask if you require one. The lounge area and bar are very good. Breakfast was fantastic and one night we a superb dinner in house. Good access to Brisbane and surrounds.

Room Tip: Ask about rooms as they do seem to vary a little in size. Will stay again when we next have to Brisb...

Dear Pommiegina

I am delighted you loved the homely feel of Spicers Balfour, I always like to think The Balfour is not just a stay but truly a home away from home. We love to share the property and being a Queenslander we hope that it delivers a part of Queenslands history to our guest and takes them on a journey of history, great design and warm hearty food made by Peter & Maria`s teams. Australian Modern Bistro at its best! We will have to ensure we get you into that King bed on your next visit.

Have a beautiful week and we hope to see you soon.
