First off, Cloudland is gorgeous. It's opulent without being tacky and a joy to look at while you're eating - there are hidden gems in the decor everywhere.
We were a little worried that this would be a 'clone' Italian with the same menu as everywhere else - as many Italian restaurants have a problem with. Cloudland is happily not like this - it's more tapas style, and they actively discourage ordering as 'starter' and 'main', encouraging sharing. This is great if you like variety with your food. Between the two of us, we ordered:
Calamari with chilli and lemon aioli
Roosciutto - i.e. kangaroo prosciutto
Slow-roasted beef cheek in red wine
We're both hungry men - but maybe could have dropped one of these, very full by the end of it. The food was all great though. Even food like the calamari - available at Italian restaurants everywhere - was a little different, complete with some tempura tentacle pieces and small pieces of fresh chilli. The mushroom risotto too was a simple dish done well, and much better than in many other venues. The kangaroo prosciutto was nice though potentially a gimmick.
Service was alright. It took a little while for the drinks to first arrive, but once the dishes started coming, they kept coming - we generally had 3 on the table at once and finished each before moving onto the next, so it was a good pace.
If you are going to eat at an Italian while in Brisbane, I'd recommend this one, as it feels a cut above your standard trattoria.
