“Fantastic staff, average facilities”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012 via mobile

Let me start by saying the staff here were amazing-very friendly, they booked some tours for me, and remembered my name, no easy feat in a large hostel! However, the rooms were really barren, plain white walls, and the corridors, hallways, and bathrooms had no ac and were extremely hot. In room ac was a bit hit or miss- in the first room I stayed in it was very hot, the second room it was working fine. Very limited computer access, and no free wifi.

However, this once does have an advantage of being a few minutes out of the bustling city centre, so its a quieter place, which is great if you aren't looking to party.

Initially before we arrived in Australia we contacted them to arrange staying there. The person Chloe was great, incredibly helpful. When we got there everything was fine. Our room was a bit disappointing it looked a stark white hospital room. Although they post that they won't tolerate bad behavior from the mostly younger guests; we had a uncomfortable experience with one of the young men that seemed to be drunk all the time and belligerent. He has harassing my partner and I, also giving the man at the reception desk a hard time. He should have been kicked out. We don't think we'll stay there again.

I stayed at Banyan View for a few nights either side of a 3 day trip to Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. The moment I arrived, the staff welcomed me with a friendly smile and did everything they could for me. They helped me organise and store my belongings safely in their luggage room and their safe. The rooms are nicely air conditioned which is a must in Darwin during the wet season (so humid!). They have two PCs to access the internet on. People are generally quite good at limiting their usage.

The location of the hostel is fantastic. Only 5 minute walk into the centre of Darwin. The shuttle bus goes to and from the lodge all day long and the staff are only too happy to organise it for you.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone that wants to enjoy their time in Darwin. It's a relaxed place with everything you need. Including a fridge in your room.... perfect for ice cold drinks!!!!!

this is my second visist to ywca hostel in darwin. i stayed in a 4 bed dorm $29 aus a night, the room is air-con, with clean laundered sheets towel and soap. bathrooms are v clean with hot running water. bus stop to mindil beach market and botannical gardens bus no 4 is right outside the hostel which cost $2 aus for 3 hours, Definitely not a party hostel, walk to darwin centre is a 10 min walk. shuttle bus from airport is $29 return operates 24hrs which is good for middle of the night flights returning from bali. the staff are helpful and will store your luggage if you go away on trips. free internet access which is a plus, lounge areas to watch tv in evening,
good size kitchen for cooking, heaps of other travellers to chat to coming in and out. Darwin is very expensive for hotels, this place is ideal if you are on a budget, it is safe, secure and clean.

I originally arrived there in April last year as I was recommended it by a workmate. It was supposed to be a very short term thing whilst I looked for a flat, but I ended up staying for quite a while!
My favourite thing about the place is the relaxed and friendly vibe - it's definately not a party hostel! It was great for me as I'm a bit of a night owl and then TV/social areas are open all night so you can always go somewhere to relax without disturbing your dorm mates (I stayed in a couple of other hostels in town that always close their social areas by 10pm, except for the bar!).
I've seen a few comments on here about having to move rooms a bit if you do stay longer - this is a bit of a pain, but the staff always try and minimise it if you let them know in advance that you want to stay longer! (They get a lot of group bookings that mean that certain rooms are booked at certain times so people do have to change a bit). The plus side of this though is that the rooms get regular deep cleans and you don't get any long termers taking over the whole room with their stuff!
I would definately recommend this hostel to anyone that is coming to Darwin and wants a relaxed vibe - if you're coming to party, this isn't the spot for you! All the bars in town though are within walking distance for when you do want a good night out!

I've actually come back to Darwin again this year - and have checked myself straight back in to the Banyan! :-)

I stayed two nights at the Banyan View Lodge, which is owned and operated by the YWCA, housing both men and women.
I rented an upper bunk bed in a nicely air-conditioned room. There were plenty of toilets and showers in the hostel, as well as a clean laundry room where guests could hang their wet clothing inside or outside (in an enclosed area).
The hostel has two free-use computers, but no WiFi. There is a large kitchen with plenty of clean dishes, utensils, pots and pans for guests’ use. In addition, there is a tiny kitchen on each of two floors, which is a very nice convenience.
Outside is a large yard with beautiful palm trees that overlook a fabulous swimming pool. It was absolutely wonderful to take a dip in the pool because Darwin has a hot, humid climate. Strong chairs and tables surrounded the pool, so it was a pleasure to simply relax there and socialize with new friends.
The hostel staff is very friendly and helpful. The hostel is a quiet place to say, well away from the hustle and bustle and rowdiness of the downtown area. The staff does not put up with noise after 11:00 pm; in fact, some loudmouth fellows who were staying there, got kicked out permanently.
I really enjoyed my short stay at the Banyan View Lodge, and I recommend staying there.

Little bit further from the centre than the other hotels but much better.
Clean rooms, large, quiet and a very helpful staff.
Shared bathroom could be better though, small with a bad smell.
Avoid backpackers dormitories because they are worse than hell!
