“Simply great food cooked perfectly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2010

As a big fan of it's sister restuarant in Brisbane (Cha Cha Cha) I wanted to try out Char. I wasn't disappointed, the food was magnificant and the ambeience just fine. The only detractor was the quality of the service. The staff were more interested in looking busy and chating than actually attending to the customers.
We started with oysters and sorbet - the combination was brilliant, this was followed by wild crispy skinned Barramundy which was cooked to perfection (I couldn't pass up the Barra) but was dispapointed to not be enjoying a steak, two of my collegues enjoyed some fine beef, they stated it was cooked to perfection and was of the highest quality. We will be back!

“Great choice for a great steak”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2010

Have wanted to try Char after great recommendation from other visitors but haven't got there in previous trips.
This trip (January 2010) we needed to treat a friend as a thank you so took him to Char.
We started with shared entree (pork with scallop, salt and pepper calamari and spiced skewers). the pork and calamari were great and while the beef on the skewers was tender it wasn't what I'd call spiced with a rather bland flavour really.
I don't usually order a steak but decided on the eye fillet here and it was lovely. At 200gm it was enough for me, cooked medium as requested and a beautiful tender steak.
We shared a side of the pumkin salad and this was quite good.
The other two diners (guys) opted for the t-bone and the waygu respectively and both were cooked beautiful with my hubby declaring the waygu one of the best steaks he's tried.
Dessert, coffee and the wine during the meal were all exceptionally good also.
The service couldn't be faulted with attentive but not intrusive wait staff throughout the meal.
Overall an exceptional good meal and night out.
Not cheap (A$260 for three) but great quaility restaurant that we would go back to next time we are in Darwin.

“Touted as best in Darwin, failed to deliver!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2009

A party of 12 went to "Char's" as a change, having heard mixed reviews and stayed away until now because of that. This opinion was formed through us being Darwinians and Residents both.
Found the food to be of a reasonable standard, but the service was appaling! We were in large ish group, some of which wished to try an entree. BIG MISTAKE! This then delayed the mains even after the entree was finished for another 1hr 15 mins. Subsequently members of our group had nothing to eat for 2 hours or more.
This was mixed in with a poor drinks service from a clearly motivated but undertrained waiter, who was waiting on another 4 tables simultaneously.
The table nearest us had a young family and how they kept their patience in the face of similar treatment I can only wonder (they left before desert having refused to wait anymore).

This is not the best that Darwin has to offer, and I nor my dining friends will not be going back.
A great shame, as the setting is up there with the best.

“Nice experience...great cocktails!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2009

The atmosphere is what attracted us to this place which has a large outdoor and lovely indoor areas. The cocktails were very extensive and good. We had Espresso Martinis. Out steaks were good, cooked exactly as we ordered them, but we think we could have gotten the same almost anywhere up here. It's ok. I"d go back for a cocktail again.

“Average pub grub in a great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2009

Went there for dinner after work recently, found the service full of silly fanfare sans
substance; food presentation was over the top with too much fuss and too little attention to meaningful and consistent service. Despite Char's reputation, I'd have to rate it mediocre at best. While the location is truly wonderful, the food and service are wanting. The place needs to lift its game; it is at best expensive pub grub. I'd recommend it as a nice beer-garden and place to sit and watch the sunset.
