Look it's a run-down old place. It's tired and no amount of scrubbing will make it sparkle! The bathrooms were old but I saw them being cleaned every day. I stayed there with 2 of my adult children and we had a 3 bed dorm with a fridge, aircon and fan.
When we arrived at 4pm nobody in reception but only a 5 minute wait no big deal. Handed our sheets and pillowcase - no towels, would have been nice to know beforehand.
Up to the room - still had LOTS of stuff in it from the previous occupants, rubbish in bin etc so clearly hadn't been cleaned.
Made the beds and the sheets looked as though they had ... stains on them but I've used enough crappy washing machines (and seen enough stains!) in my life to know what cheap washing powder + awful top loader makes laundry look like.
NO PILLOWS!! We were actually quite happy to go and buy 3 pillows for $30.
It was nice to have our own fridge and that made up for some of the downsides.
The kitchen was always grubby but again I saw it being cleaned at night. Yes, 9 o'clock close is early but if the other guests cleaned up after themselves all would be fine - the cleaning took a LONG time.
No recycling which is a shame and encourages people to be a bit cleaner I reckon. Cana't understand why they don't have a compost bin reckon the kitchen would stay cleaner and smell better. The bin was always full with sloppy stuff dripping down the sides - ugh.
The communal fridge in the kitchen was a filthy mess - glad we didn't have to use it. We weren't game to use the kitchen - found good cheap eats out.
Didn't use the pool but it looked clean.
Bathrooms were old and hot water was a bit temperamental but they had newish clean shower curtains. No hand soap in the dispenser (we were there for 4 nights) but paper towels which was nice. Always had toilet paper in the cubicles and saw them cleaned each day.
Noise - we were there for my son's 18th, went out every night and we DID all sing happy birthday to him at 4am so I guess in that respect we were part of the problem. Night guy told us to shut up so we did but I'm sure some guests were ticked off at the time. Sorry about that, people.
The last night we were there one girl got totally smashed, falling over, crying, abusive, staggering, slurring drunk. She went from telling me she loved me to slapping me and trying to throw my drink in my face when I suggested maybe a sleep would do her good. I spoke to the night guy (who doesn't seem to know how to smile!) and told him I'd call the cops if she did it again. Poor bloke really - he said he'd love me to do that. Really, what can they do? They let her sleep the night and evicted her next day. I'd have thought it a nasty decision had they thrown her out that night and in that condition. I reckon it was handled fairly well.
The location was fantastic. Other backpackers in Mitchell St. (which was where I tried having read the awful reviews on her) were in the thick of the action and must be noisy. I love the night life but staying in the thick of it 24/7 must be awful. Darwin's tiny and even tho we had a rental car we walked everywhere in the city. I felt really safe even at 2am.
We had trouble with the WiFi but don't think it was the fault of management and we got it sorted anyway with the help of another guy staying there. We were out all day, every day (and most of the night!) so we didn't use the common areas much at all.
Parking was a minor problem - not many spaces but at least there were SOME.
Some of the staff could use a wash and some DEODORANT.
I reckon the main problem with this place is that the staff don't give a s*it and that flows on to the guests. I've never stayed anywhere with such a lazy, dirty group of people but I think a lot of that is a flow-on from the staff. When in Rome etc. And if you can't beat them join them.
I'm just back from Bali and stayed in much dodgier places over there!
Our aircon was fine and didn't leak.
Overall - it's just another backpackers. And I'll stay there again - and remember my pillow!
Pay for 3 beds and get the 3 bed dorm to yourself!!
