“Quiet, great staff, nice location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

We spent two nights here, arriving at 6am because of the flight from Melbourne. We left our luggage and explored before returning around 10am to see when the room might be ready. We were told that it might be soon, far earlier than the usual 2pm check-in. So, we went grocery shopping and returned to find it ready. They knew how tired we were and ours was the first to be cleaned. How addommodating! Wonderful staff, helpful, knowledgeable. This is a smaller YHA and the noise restrictions are highly enforced. There is a beautiful pool and patio, lots of barbecues. The only drawback was the small kitchen with only four burners, but, because of the barbecues, this was not a problem. We would definitely stay here again.

We didn't use the air con, which apart from being full of mould, seemed to make no difference to the room. We found it impossible to sleep under the ceiling fan, which had only two speeds: silent (i.e. off) and noisier than a helicopter (on). And this was in a private room with a good bathroom and a good quiet location at the back.
There was evidence of work underway, and things may improve.
With no window blinds, though, there was little privacy. The kitchen is very small for a hostel this size.
All the rooms seem quite small (no big dormitories) with bathrooms for each one. We heard several stories, though, of bad feeling caused by one person in a shared room getting up very early (because so many trips, or the airport bus for major internal flights, go at 6 am). There is also noise from rooms where longer term residents leave early for work.
But private hostels in the major part of Mitchell Street have all those problems plus much more street noise, so I don't think we made such a bad choice in coming here.

Room Tip: Negotiate if you can! But it's often full.

I think It is a clean backpacker with a good location on Mitchell street, close to the CBD, air conditioning, swimming pool but I had not this feeling of friendship and fun with staff and backpackers I could find in All YHA previously stayed.

Good location close to the inner city entertainment area yet in a quiet position. Clean and comfortable with pool, kitchen, washing and a bar attached at the front. Excellent price with good staff to support.

Room Tip: Stay in a room on the south side as there is an aircon plant next door on the Nth that can be a bit...

Stayed here for one night in a private room after arriving from Melbourne and before heading off on a tour. Location is good being at quieter end of Mitchell Street, check in and out was quick and easy. It's always nice having your own bathroom, and the only problem I had was that the air con was too loud, other than that the room was fine. I can't comment on the kitchen and other facilities as I did not use them.

I stayed in a number of YHA hostels whilst in Australia and this one didn't have the same friendly feel as the others. The staff were very nice and the bedding clean but there was a large number of longer term residents and I didn't feel very safe. The night I arrived the staff and security guards were discussing an episode of threatening behavior by a resident which had just happened and the following night I was threatened by a girl who had apparently spent the evening drinking in our room. The staff did give me another room but didn't seem surprised that the episode had happened or make any attempt to tackle or challenge the behavior. Whilst I may have just been unlucky and had a bad experience there are lots of hostels along Mitchell Street in Darwin and I would advise travelers to choose one of them instead.
