“Met expectations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

Perhaps it was because I'd just come off The Ghan, but the standard I was met with at Darwin YHA was great. The room was clean, the kitchen was fine, and the location was excellent. The staff were friendly, although a few of them seemed a bit cold when asked questions of the place.

In terms of value for money, it probably wasn't the best deal, but it met my needs just fine.

Room Tip: Ask for a room towards the back if you like your sleep.

I stayed in many excellent YHA's in Australia but this one is not value for prize. The rate for a 6-bed dorm is about $37 which may be justified by the ensuite bathrooms. But with six mates in the room you might find yourself waiting for the bathroom to be vacant.
Fortunately, I came here by eNights ($230 for 10 nights). However, the staff seemed unable to cope with my eNights reservation which is why I had to leave my membership card at the desk until they would have figured it out. Furthermore, although I had booked three nights I had to change the room after two nights which was inconvinient as I had a tour on day 3.
The rooms are okay and come with a fridge. But there are no lockers!
The kitchen is very small, fridges and shelves are over-stuffed. Some of the cooking fields and water heaters didn't work.
In my personal opinion the owners don't care too much about their guests having a good time.

My friend and I were in Darwin to work graveyard shifts over the V8 races. So as not to be inconvenienced or to inconvenience other guests, we paid $145 per night for a family room to ourselves. There was no hot water. In 9 days we had tepid to cold showers and they could not use peak times as an excuse. We generally showered at 1pm and 5am! When I notified Dave at the front desk, he looked at me as though I were extremely demanding. He was so rude and unhelpful that we avoided him the rest of the trip.

It turned out to be lucky we were working each night from 9pm-4.30am as there is a sports bar directly attached to the YHA that was playing European sport during the wee hours. The first night I was kept awake by chanting, singing, shouting and talking til I managed to drift off sometime after 4.

I will NEVER stay here again and would not recommend. Apart from David Downer, the rest of the staff seemed pretty dim, although the room cleaner guys were nice and the only helpful people there.

Room Tip: Ask for one as far away from the sports bar as possible so that you aren't kept awake from 1.30a...

I stayed for two nights in a 6-bed dorm. They have made it so the windows barely open, so the room was very stuffy and hot. Between that and the uncomfortable mattress, I could not get a good night's sleep. They are renovating, so hopefully it will get better. Some better fans in the rooms would help a lot.

The bar attached to the hostel is pretty good. The Swedish bartender is a very friendly guy. It's a good place to meet other travellers.

Stayed there for a couple of nights in a 4 bed female dorm. There is a small bar fridge and ensuite in the room which is very convenient. The bathroom is clean and new but there is no lockers in the room. There is also no bedside lights which make reading difficult because there is only one light in the room. It is not convenient to leave the lights on when other guests are sleeping. The communal kitchen is very small if you should choose to cook your own meals.

Located along the main street and a short distance walk to supermarket and restaurants.

Room Tip: Try not to stay close to the pool area because it is right next to a conjoin pub and it can be noisy...

I stayed here for over a week , until they put the prices up without warning from an already expensive $32.50 to $37 so was forced to leave. There is one particular member of staff who has his face tripping him the whole time and speaks to you like garbage, no matter how friendly you may be. these are average rooms at expensive prices = stay away

I stayed 3 nights in a 6-share room. Its an old motor-inn building. This is only a level 3 YHA, but I was still surprised it wasn't better kept up. A fresh coat of paint, a little more cleaning, better kitchen stuff. They are almost done improving all the rooms with new bathrooms and carpets which is nice.

Pros:
- location is a close walk to town
- friendly staff
- AC and fan in room
- bathroom and small fridge in room
- about 6 power outlets in room
- free luggage storage room
- All nights everyone went to bed by 11pm in my room. This isn't a party hostel, so if you like to sleep this is good!

Cons:
- shower water goes everywhere in bathroom, including into the room's carpet. The room smells a bit of mildew because of this.
- bathroom has no extraction fan for moisture and bathroom stink. Opening window let's hot air in.
- both 2 sets of gas burners inside kitchen do not auto-light, you need to use your own lighter. There are a bunch of burners outside to use too.
- no lockers or personal bedside lights in room.
- room doors are accessed from outdoor hallway. Not all doors auto-lock so people could just walk in even if they weren't staying at the hostel(this wasn't a problem I had, but something to keep in mind)

Indifferent:
- lobby smells of stale beer from pub next door
- no indoor lounge area to hang with people. Only outside around the pool.
