“Great Hotel, but ask for specific room!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2009

This is a great hotel, not in the CBD of Darwin but a nice 10 minute walk. The hotel has only been open since March 09 but they have done a great job. There is a walkway that takes you straight to city. Ask at reception on how to get to the walkway, it makes the trip to the city much better.

The wave pool is excellent, $5 for half day or $8 for the full day. Now the rooms...I stayed at the Medina but there are also Vibe rooms (apparently the Vibe Rooms are just hotel rooms). I had a 1 bedroom apartment, BUT the view was horrible. I have put up some pictures. If you are going to fork out the money for a one bedroom ask for the pool view (or Room 432).
The breakfast is a standard fare - the staff need some serious training!
Curve Restaurant has all the basics - club sandwich, pizza, wraps etc. Nothing special.
If you are going to eat out in Darwin, try Char Restaurant, Pee Wee's or La Beach. Don't forget to go to the Minidi Markets on Thursday night.

I only stayed for one night but was impressed but this new hotel. I had a one bedroom room with a bit of a view. Everything was clean and in a good condition, except the taps were a bit wobbly.

The hotels is located within walking distance of the centre of Darwin but removed enough to feel like you're away from it all. There was still a bit of building work going on in the waterfront area but it didn't affect me.

Staff were friendly and helpful. They ordered me two taxis quite efficiently.

I didn't use the pool or restaurant but they looked good.

This was our fourth trip to Darwin and was by far the best place we've stayed there. Darwin accomm is in high demand in the dry season, and priced accordingly. Plus there seem to be a lot of places with delusions about their own quality.
The Medina is co-located with the Vibe and shares public areas and restaurant, however they provide different levels of comfort. We booked a 1BR Medina apt, with water views and a balcony for 5 nights. It was a good size and had a decent contemporary decor. The location was ideal. In the new waterfront area, less than 5 minutes walk from the centre of the city. Plus the view was excellent.
Neither room was large but were perfectly comfortable for two. The kitchen was well equipped and allowed us to make our own breakfasts and keep snacks. Bedroom had two single beds placed together but the join was not obvious. Nice linen. Bathroom was good - although why they insisted on changing the towels daily I've got no idea. Just because you have water, unlike most of the rest of Australia, why waste it?
I didn't try the restaurant but my husband thought the breakfast was a bit mediocre.
I particularly liked the reception staff. We requested a room change to the higher floor (to move away from the restaurant, although it didn't end up being necessary)and this was done with no hassle in a 100% occupancy hotel. Even when we were buying a paper or checking out we were appreciated their friendliness.
re construction - we heard no noise at all when in our room or on the balcony, but there was building going on in the ground floor tenancies and in the shops or offices along the walkway on level 5. It had no impact on us.
The hotel is only about five minutes' walk along the waterfront from the open air Deck chair Cinema. I'd recommend it as a good night out.

I suspect the reason we were bumped by the sister Travel Lodge and booked in here was to boost numbers and generate feedback - it was a bit quiet - but we went from slightly annoyed to fairly content quite quickly. The rooms were smallish but new and well designed. The view over the Waterfront was nice as was the pool. Breakfast exceeded our expectations (except the coffee!) and the staff were helpful.

The housekeeping were vague and hopelessly slow - we waited hours before repeating our request, eventually the manager marched down there himself to sort it out for us. (Then housekeeping knocked on our door hours later to see what it was we wanted...),

But otherwise our stay was good and its close enough to the city via a rooftop bridge to make it a good option.

My husband and I stayed at the Medina Grand for 5 nights from 20 June returning 25 June 2009.

The Good

A one or two bedroom apartment has good space, functional with kitchen and washing machine/dryer, great bed and would be fantastic for families given the location of the wave pool. Also central to quite a few Darwin attractions like the World War II sites and main shopping centre. Worth staying given the cost of other accommodation during the dry season.

The Bad

Studio rooms are pokey. Okay only for one night. Nasty smell in the room that we couldn't shift with the windows open and we asked to be moved which the management did without complaint to a bigger and quieter part of the hotel. Noisy with construction works in the very close vicinity and above the main reception.

If you stay, ask for a room not above reception otherwise coaches will wake you from 5 am each morning.
