My mate and myself got into Darwin after a 5 day tour from Alice and were booked in the Youth Shack for 1 night before setting off for Kakadu. We got there about 6pm and it was very slow checking in even though we were the only two there, plus two girls from England, who were having trouble of their own checking in as the staff knew nothing about their reservation. They wanted $30 deposit for the sheets. My room was a tiny coffin jam packed with four beds and a very smelly man. The rooms have no ensuite, just a tiny sink (to vomit in), mirror, and 4 lockable compartments for your backpack. It was very noisy as it's right over a pub/nightclub, and at 4am a drunk guy came into the room and stood there staring at me. We had to get up at 5am the next day so it wasn't a very pleasant stay. If your looking for peace and quiet the night before a tour i suggest trying the Banyan View Lodge down the road, which is a much better hostel and has a fine garden with a pool and spa. I didn't enjoy my experience at the Youth Shack...
