“A nice pitch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

We stayed at kings canyon resort for one night, we were travelling in a campervan so just got a powered sight on the ground. The facilities were good, everything we needed for the night - including very clean bathroom and BBQ facilities. Didn't get to experience the bars or restaurants as were living on a budget. But all in all, a good place to park up and rest our heads.

I got a budget room without the budget price. No AC working, no utensils in kitchen and tucked away from main resort. You are better off sleeping in your car and you would get the same experience without the cost.

We arrived to Kings Canyon after a long drive from Ayers Rock. It was 3 pm and we were hoping to get to our room, even though check-in supposedly started at 4 pm. It was low season and the hotel half empty, we had a Standard room (not the cheapest) so we were optimistic. We paid, did all the paperwork, then were told to go and wait at the bar until 4 pm (my guess is to make us spend more money). We asked if we could at least use the resort swimming pool, the answer was no, well, not until 4 pm. That is the kind of service and attention to detail you usually get at 200 AU$ a night (plus meals).

The room itself was as bad as the one we had just left in the Ayers Rock Resort. We had a small private terrace overlooking the bush, a comfortable big bed and a medium-sized bathroom with natural light. AC worked properly and was quite silent. Still, it was not worth the price we paid for it.

The bar and restaurant were incredibly expensive and waiters seemed to hate their jobs, I didn't see them smile once while we were waiting for them to bother approach us. We got tired of waiting there and ended up leaving and buying some overpriced fruit, milk and cereals and had dinner and breakfast in our room.

The swimming pool was the best thing in the Kings Canyon resort. As I said it was low season and there was almost nobody there. We spent the rest of the afternoon swimming alone. The morning after we came back before 10 am (check-out time) from the rim walk and had a last swim before hitting the road again.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay with us.

I apologise that we were not able to get you into your room before 4pm. When we are quiet we roster our housekeeping staff accordingly, and as much as we would love to get our guests into their rooms as soon as they arrive (we appreciate the long drive out here) it is not always possible.
With regards to using the pool before 4pm, there is absolutely no reason why you should have been denied this and I can assure you that this has been addressed with the staff at the resort and rectified as a matter of priority - our sincerest apologies for this.

We can appreciate that our prices for the accommodation and food are a little higher than other resorts but given the remoteness of our location our costs are also higher and therefore are a little more expensive to the consumer.

We are pleased to hear that you were able to make use of the pool in the warm weather and hope that you have had a safe onwards journey.

Thank you again for your review.

Kind Regards,
Monique Jeffrey

After a long day of driving we were all keen to have a swim in the pool, relax in our deluxe room and enjoy a nice meal....but the pool was unappealing, small, cold with flies everywhere, the room was more like a motel, a bit worn around the edges with a bizare spa bath arrangement looking out onto a pile of rocks, and it smelt like an eggy sewer! When I complained to reception they merrily told us it must be the sulphur in the pipes - no apology, not attempt to help, no interest! The restaurant area was also very strange - with a bbq/music area, pool table area, and restaurant section all within what felt like a cattle shed. The main restaurant is a mix of motorway cafe and pretentious eatery - uninterested staff seem to enjoy watching customer after customer sit at their tables waiting to be served until eventually realising they need to order and pay at the counter for their hugely overpriced food. The food was fine but we couldn't wait to get out of the resturant and back to our smelly rooms!

Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay at Kings Canyons.

I am disappointed to hear that you experienced some issues with your room and the cleanliness of the pool. These issues were addressed immediately with the property directly and I can assure you and future guests that this has been rectified.

With regards to some of the service you experienced, this is also disappointing to hear. We have a wonderful staff group from all over the world and your comments are not consistent with the excellent service we pride ourselves on. We take all feedback seriously and this has been followed up with members of these departments to ensure it doesn't happen again.

We do hope that you have to opportunity to come back to Kings Canyon again in the future.

Kind Regards,

We stayed here for three nights in a deluxe spa room. When visiting Kings Canyon there is not really any other options of choice for accommodation in the area so basically you are left with this place. Firstly, it is not a resort, but more a camping ground aimed at looking after the tour buses that come to stay for one night before heading back to Yulara or Alice Springs. Staying for three nights was proberly too much, I would recommend two at the most. As once you have done the rim walk around the canyon there is not much else to see/do in the area. The resort seems to be getting most of its clientele from the tour buses, and when they arrive you definitely notice how busy the two restaurants become.

The first restaurant is a barbecue styled buffet, whereby you choose your meat and then select your sides and salads from a buffet. There is a band playing at dinner time in this restaurant and the tables are communual. We did not eat here as it was more expensive and the band turned us off.
The second restaurant was the better of the two. You order your meal at the counter and they bring it to you quite quickly. The food was fairly good considering our location. Both restaurants are casual. There is a bar "the thirsty dingo" located inbetween the restaurants. As described in previous reviews, the food & drinks are pricey....but that's to be expected in such a remote area.

I was quite shocked they did not make more use of the picturesque location.....there was a beautiful view, but the restaurants faced the highway and a petrol station. It has potential, but it just does not get there.

The staff appear to be mainly international. They were friendly enough. Although most things are self service so you did not really deal with them much at all.

The deluxe spa room was quite large and was well cleaned. The decor was dated. The spa in theory sounds like a great idea, but the window next to it was so big and not tinted I was a bit worried somebody would walk passed and see in! As there were footprints on the sand outside!

The Internet at the reception is terrible. Do not even bother trying to use it. You will waste both your money and your time.

We did a tour of the canyon rim which was good. But not necessary. You can do it yourself and read the signposts and follow the directions on your own. When we were about to get on the APTT bus to go to the tour the bus driver/person marking names off would not let us on until we each bought 1.5L of water. Now this may be reasonable in summer, but in winter early in the morning, carrying around 6L of water (we had four people in our family group) was just crazy and totally uneccessary. He even made us run to the petrol station to buy more saying "we would not be allowed on the tour if we did not". But when we met the tour guides/rangers at the park they said we didn't need that much and one bottle each would be fine! We were so frustrated at having to lug 6L around!!

Overall, there is nowhere else to stay, this is it. Stay for one or two nights, see the canyon and then get out if there.

My wife and I must have traveled at the right time. We did not experience many flies and the weather was perfect. We spent a night at this hotel in mid August.
Yes I do agree the rooms were rather expensive but you were not in the city you are in a very remote area. For the standard of the hotel I found it expensive but the rooms were very clean and the spa was great.
The food and the beer was great and i must admit I had one of the best meals I have had for a long time.
The service from the staff was extremely good . The meal came to us very quickly and it was hot.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience.

It is great to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. The rooms are spacious and clean as you have mentioned and the spa rooms are particularly popular! We can appreciate that our prices for the accommodation are a little higher than a city hotel but given the remoteness of our beautiful resort our costs are also higher.

Glad that you enjoyed the food and the beer - we have a fantastic team of chefs!

We hope that you have to opportunity to come back to Kings Canyon again in the future.

No point in going over what other people have already wrote. The rooms in the hotel are expensive. The food is expensive. The beer is expensive, although they did have $6 draught beers, which was a real deal. Just go to experience Kings Canyon and get there early in the morning before it gets hot and the flies come out. The experience will not quite make up for the expense of the stay but it is an experience so just go for it.

Thank you for your recent review discussing pricing and tips on when to do the Rim walk.

Your comments on expenses is well made and noted. We are doing business in one of the most remote places in the one of the biggest countries and most sparsely populated areas on the planet. The costs we incur here can't be compared even locally because of our unique location and costs. Everything costs us more to operate. Our business uses satellites for emails and wireless towers for phones calls. Our closest town is 470 kilometres away. We make our own power and provide the water and other services.

That all being said we want to the experience to be 'worth it'. The Kings Canyon is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The connection people make with the Canyon often overrides the experience at the other popular areas in the Red Centre.

Thanks again for taking the time to make comments on Tripadvisor. There is another page on Tripadvisor called 'Kings Canyon Resort'
