“Lots of potential but seemed rather run down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2014

Good sized, comfortable room but en suite bathroom was a little dingy. The hotel lies between 2 busy roads which made for a noisy night as large vehicles pounded past. Communal areas, including the 2 pools felt run down and in need of some TLC but this may have been due to the recent end of the rainy season - certainly the climate is harsh here but at the very least a daily wipe-down of the sunbeds would be very easy. There seemed to be plenty of potential to make this a lovely place without much effort. A particular positive note must be made about the staff - everyone in Reception, bar and restaurant could not have been more pleasant or helpful. I've rated the hotel a generous 3 after taking into account the price we paid (under £70 a night B&B) and the lovely staff.

Sadly the town itself matches the run down feel of the hotel and has little to offer - especially on a Saturday when all the shops and cafes seemed to be closing by 2pm. This was also our first experience of the dreadful Red Centre flies so the first requirement is to find an open shop to buy fly nets - they'll still drive you nuts though and they get worse at Uluru!!

Room Tip: With busy roads at front and back it's hard to see how any rooms could be quiet.

Hotel advertises a restaurant online - but when we got there, only ordering over the bar to eat at plastic tables and chairs - not even the standard of a pub/club. Drink prices and food prices were way over the top, especially considering the shabby environment and service.
We didn't stay ...

Dear Rob,

Thanks for your comments and I'm sorry that you didn't stay to test out our food.

Our restaurant has been closed during the low season, although we have still provided the dinner menu to our guests and visitors in the bar and on the restaurant terrace (the plastic chairs you mentioned are out by the pool area).

I do hope that you may try us again and be able to review the dining experience.

Kind regards,

All the staff were soooooo helpful and very nice..restaurant/bar comfortable with nice food.

Rooms were clean and we felt very safe there.

If we return to Alice we would only stay here as we had a fab experience.

Thank you everyone.

The first night stay was good. Room was clean, TV channels all available. I was happy. I checked out the next day but I was returning again last night.

Last night, the room was good. But the bathroom was not cleaned properly. Shower head and soap holder was not cleaned properly. The ashtray on the balcony was not cleaned after the previous guest and there was a half-drunk bottle of soft-drink still sitting on the balcony coffee table.

My family and I stayed here before and after the camping tour to Ayers rock, my sister and I shared a room and our parents had the room next door. The rooms were big, basic and fairly clean and had very comfy beds (a single and a double so I got the double - Score!) the rooms were great value at only $50 a room and not a bad location about a 10 minute walk down to the shops. The staff here were really friendly and helpful especially the lady who gave us breakfast boxes to have on the bus. If you are doing the tour and returning you can put your luggage in storage there free of charge.

This is a difficult place to review because I don't believe it makes any effort to be any better than average or position itself above being a budget hotel - that said the walk in rate to stay isn't exactly budget - thankfully I booked ahead. As such, it is difficult to be too critical - you get what you pay for.

This hotel seems to reflect all others in the area - motel type buildings - so it isn't atypical or worse than the others - from the outside at least.

The good:
- Comfortable beds
- Rooms were clean in all the obvious areas (move anything and it's thick with dust)
- Staff friendly and helpful
- Free movie channels (two) was a bonus but note this isn't on demand
- Main pool/spa is good
- Free hot drinks / water in the reception area
- Good location - about 10mins walk into the centre (note we were warned at night to get a taxi back and not to walk if out beyond 9/10pm)

The bad:
- On one of the days housekeeping hadn't touched the bathroom - I asked for it to be done only for housekeeping to pop by later with one additional towel...!
- Quite expensive wi-fi - I appreciate all hotels charge for Wifi but I'm sure this will be a thing of the past over the next few years.
- Bathroom was very tired with lots of stains and marks - prehistoric shower attachment setup..!
- Quite a bit of the linen was stained with old marks - not dirty, just stained
- One of the pools was thick with stuff blown onto it - probably not easy in this location to keep clean however, but still...
- Ate at the restaurant on one night and waited over an hour for food - food was ok to good
- On one of the nights staff mysteriously appeared from behind the bar with half a bottle of wine and consumed it whilst smoking with the customers - on or off duty, this seems a bit too casual and unprofessional - but this might be accepted here
- The aircon key is attached to your main room key - it switches off when you leave the room. Not great when in the heat - due to the gaps in the patio and main doors it struggles to keep up anyway. Spent an evening in the room sweltering despite the aircon being on full.
- It does feel a little like you can't move without being charged for something else!

Overall it's tired and has a run down feel - you may be better off elsewhere - but it's probably ok for a couple nights stay - not for much longer. Look elsewhere first for a better deal.
