“Charming French classic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

With three friends we had a great night at this excellent, intimate restaurant. It is as advertised, with a gifted chef serving up classic French dishes and his delightful lady welcoming a capacity crowd of less than 20 diners. She added to the theatre with beautiful presentation of the dishes. For example, added at the table were sherry stirred into a rich onion soup, cooking juices were spooned over a spectacular baby guinea fowl and other dishes were set alight. We had pâté and the soup. Chateaubriand and guinea fowl, profiteroles and a Chantilly meringue dish. The menu was extensive and well balanced. Each dish was presented as if it was the focus of the night and the mains were complimented by excellent vegetables. The restaurant is byo and licensed. The toilet is next door but that was no problem. Just terrific.

“Hidden treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

This is our favourite restaurant in Sydney. Looks like nothing from the outside, you have to use the bathrooms in the next door back packers, you have to pay in cash and you can barely swing a cat in the dining room..... but we love it. The ambience and sheer quality of food cant be beaten in Sydney, there is none of the pretentiousness of other restaurants around the area. Always start with the French onion soup and then the hardest decision is if you share a chateaubriand or have the amazing Duck a la orange. Its hard to find room for desert and one to share is the way to go. Everything about the experience is perfect, especially that its BYO so you can share the experience with a friend or loved one and a bottle of your perfect plonk.

“RUDE!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

I've heard good things about this restaurant but unfortunately, I will never go to this restaurant because of how rude the owner is on the phone! I had made a booking for dinner and was really looking forward to it when on the day, I was sick with flu. I called the restaurant to cancel my booking and the owner got angry on the phone, saying 'you made a booking, now you cancel!!' before hanging up on me! That is really childish and RUDE behaviour and I was being nice enough to give him a call to cancel instead of just not turning up. No amount of good food can make up for this kind of rude behaviour!

“The Grand Dame of Tiny Restaurants”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

Mere Catherine has been running for so long I can not remember....it is a tiny little rough diamond in Kings Cross and you definitely need to book as they never have a table left (there are only 18 of them). The menu is the same as I remember it 25 years ago and the food just as excellent.. Back in the day EVERYTHING was mismatched but noticed last night that glasses and plates all matched which removed some of the old quirkiness. Chateaubriand is the most awesome I have ever eaten served with roast potatoes that I have never been able to replicate (I think they may cook them in duck fat but they will not tell) and creamed spinach that any vege hater would love. They only take CASH so be prepared. Deserts are traditional and yummy...if you love simple, hardy French food - GO THERE... No fuss or bother it delivers every time. Right near Kings Cross station so you can catch a train. BYO and option.

“Quirky restaurant....Fantastic food....not to be missed.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2011

What an experience....only very small but with bags of atmosphere and character.....must make a booking....seems all five tables are full every night. I have to say one of the most memorable meals I have had....and the french onion soup was absolutely to die for.

Small enough to be just that bit different......big enough to leave a lasting impression.

Gerard Humair, the owner / chef is very welcoming and I can recommend this restaurant to anyone who appreciates good food, good conversation and a great atmosphere.
