“Best Meal in Australia!”

Was in Australia on a trip which included Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Naturally, tried to venture to new restaurants. Dinner at Sardine Room, which I went with 3 other friends, turned out to be the best meal I had in Australia!

First of all, Angela lived up to her reputation as a fun, gracious host. Her casual manner and sardonic humour immediately broke the ice and put all of us at ease.

We decided to share our starters, which was a good idea because the portions were generous. We ordered the squid ravioli (2 orders because each order came with 2 pieces), shrimp wanton and the calamari. Our favourite was the calamari. Tasty and addictive. The ravioli was good too, each containing an egg yolk which was supposed to be cooking even as it was served. The explosion of the semi-cooked egg yolk in the mouth was a sensation to remember, though I found the ravioli skin a tad thick and tough. The shrimp wantons were fragrant and tasty -- we could smell the dish when it was to a neighbouring table, which convinced us that we made the right choice. If I were to be fussy, I would say that the skin of the wanton wasn't quite up to scratch -- too thick and a bit tough.

For mains, we ordered the baby snapper (supposed to be the signature dish), seafood moussaka, seafood pie and trout with truffle risotto. The baby snapper was, by no means baby in size! It was deep fried and drizzled with a soy sauce-chives gravy, giving it a very Asian flavour. The moussaka was a nice balance between the egg plant and other ingredients cooked in a tasty sauce. Ditto the seafood pie. The trout on the risotto was so so, but the truffle risotto itself was heavenly, with the right subtle touch of truffle aroma which I personally like.

The guys in our party did not have room for desserts but the girls order one to share. I forget what is was...though we took a pic :) By all accounts, it was very good!

Angela is apparently expecting, with the baby due in August-September. We wish her well and look forward to visiting The Sardine Room when we are next in Sydney.

“Perfect, great fish”

Absolute perfect execution for both food and service, enjoyed everything. The fish was sublime and it is easy to see why the restaurant is so highly rated. Great wine list and nice atmosphere. Book before, a little bit crowded..

“The taste of Sydney”

The restaurant and food was recommended to me by few friends and they took me there for dinner. The restaurant ambiance, atmosphere, decor and synthetic sense was something one can't forget to praise. Its a small, tiny and intimate cosy property thats also has an outside seating on the pavement of the street. We ordered the fish and chips and the food was very good. Dont forget to try the vietnamese salad with snapper and calamari. They have huge vartities of pudding as well, although i haven't tried that. If you are a veggie, then this place does also have long list of Veggie dishes on the menu. THis restaurant is highly recommended.

“Our favourite restaurant in Sydney”

We returned to the Sardine Room this year after discovering it on our annual trip to Sydney last year. We were staying at the Blue Hotel at Woolloomolloo (never could spell that) and this restaurant is a 5-10 minute walk away (but up a huge flight of steps-good for working up an appetite). It's small and intimate and cosy but with outside seating on the pavement in a street which is quiet. Angela and her husband are warm and friendly and you will be greeted by a 'whatever you want-you are in my house now'. The food is fabulous-with an emphasis on fish everything is very fresh. On our several visits we've had the whole snapper-amazing, the calamari-amazing, the soft shell crabs-amazing, the red thai curry cod-amazing. What can I say the food is amazing! Make sure you also try the Vietnamese salad and the almond and orange pudding. Angela will make whatever she can gluten free for you and as we found out when we turned up with a vegetarian friend she will just have the chef rustle something up if there is nothing to suit-a fabulous butternut squash risotto in this case. And being Oz you can take your own wine which helps keep the cost down. We love this place and can't wait to go back next year-just a shame it's so far away! We were treated like guests not customers.

“What service”

This restaurant was recommended to us with Angela sitting down with us to "get to know us" before making a recommendation. We had lamb and some local wine that was so very complimentary to the lamb. We enjoyed 2 dinners here, and would go back more, except it's an 18 hour flight from home!
